Nashville’s African American newspaper backs May Town Center

North Nashville’s African-American community has sent another shot across Mayor Karl Dean’s bow on the proposed May Town Center and the Tennessee State University Research Park, a shot that also could damage plans to build a convention center.

Dallas was also able to get a top rating on its bonds and subsequently a good interest rate by making a “moral obligation” pledge. Without that pledge, the bonds would have gotten a lower rating and the city would have had to pay a higher interest rate. It’s likely that Dallas wouldn’t have been able to sell nearly $500 million in bonds with a lower rating in this financial climate. Nashville faces the same situation.

Hospitality industry gears up for 2010 menu labeling veto override

At the beginning of the next General Assembly session, Gov. Phil Bredesen likely will face another veto override, one at the behest of Tennessee’s hospitality industry.

Bredesen recently vetoed legislation that effectively would have nixed new menu-labeling rules created by the Metro Board of Health in March.
