At the investor’s call this month, Rockstar proudly announced that GTA 5 has been one of their best launches and continues to help them generate revenue.
The income will be used to create new titles, possibly GTA 6 and maybe a new IP.
The company posted a successful quarter made possible by GTA 5 and GTA Online. According to Rockstar, the game which was originally launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 more than two years ago still goes strong on modern generation platforms. When it was launched on older generation consoles, gamers were kind of annoyed. The new PS4 and the Xbox One had no word of a launch until it was confirmed almost a year later.
PC gamers had to wait even longer for the game to get launched but when it did, it supported cool 4K resolution, had a first person view and plenty of mods created by the enthusiastic community. People on Windows platform always have to wait for a Rockstar game. While the wait is annoying most times, it becomes worth it with such a huge community of developers, mod creators and the original developers continue to support it with new content.
GTA 5 received the new track creator recently. It enables players to create wacky racing tracks and race it along with friends. Not many games can boast of such a huge world where fun is unlimited. Another huge DLC is on its way, named the Bikers and Gang. The name is self-descriptive! It’s about bikers on Harley Davidson bikes roaming the huge streets of Los Santos. There will be plenty of gang wars and other issues to take care of.
GTA Online is going strong and almost all the bugs found in the past are now fixed. Rockstar also announced that they made some great revenue with Battleborn and NBA 2K16. The MOBA game Battleborn didn’t perform as expected because of stiff competition from titles like DOTA 2, League of Legends and the newly launched Overwatch.
Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch is a lot like Battleborn and was immediately embraced by the community. The game did create a dent in Rockstar’s revenue stream. Howeer, the developers are not going to stop at anything. They are already ready to announce some new titles including brand new IPs. We hope it is GTA 6 and probably Red Dead Redemption or some other brand new open world game.
