The Nexus 5x, the 6P, the Nexus 4,5,6,7,9 and 10 will be receiving the new Wi Fi Assistant feature.
A post in the Google Plus announced by Nexus states that the Wi Fi Assistant feature will be offered to all the Nexus devices in the UK, the US, Mexico and Canada as well as Nordic countries.
Exclusive to Project Fi
The Wi Fi assistant feature was earlier a feature that was exclusive for the Project Fi and now it will be offered to all users of Nexus devices in the abovementioned regions. According to Nexus, the new feature will keep the speed high and reduce the data bill. The feature automatically makes a search for free Wi Fi hotspots, like those found in a coffee shop or an airport and switches the connection seamlessly from the cellular network on the device to the free Wi Fi hotspot, verified by Google.
Wi Fi AssistantFeature
Users of the Nexus devices in the abovementioned regions can take advantage of the new feature and there is no need to subscription the Project Fi in this case. Nexus stated that the Wi Fi Assistant feature allows users to connect in a secure, automatic manner to an open Wi Fi hotspot, according to The Verge. When the user connects to a Wi Fi hotspot, there is no charge on using data.
According to Google, they have verified more than one million quick and safe public hotspots for Wi Fi. These were leveraged in case of the Project Fi in the beginning. Google also offers security for data through encryption, when users connect over such an open wireless hotspot. According to the Nexus product line, the devices mentioned above, namely, the Nexus 10, the Nexus 9, the Nexus 7, the Nexus 6P, the Nexus 5x, the Nexus 6, the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 4 are eligible for this feature. The feature will cover these devices, but they have to run on the new Android version or on Android 5.1 version. The Project Fi is limited to only some devices, namely the Nexus 6, the 6P and the 5X.
Accessing WiFi Assistant
The user can access the feature of Wi Fi Assistant in the Settings application, where there are several tabs. When you tap on the Google tab, you can access its Networking panel and the switch is located here. When the connection is successful, the notification bar on the phone or device will show the virtual icon for the private network that is being accessed.
Limitations of WiFi Assistant
However, there are some limitations to this feature. The Assistant will not help users to connect to a network that Google has not certified for fastness or reliability. The Assistant will also not help users to connect to a network that involves an additional step, such as a log in. In such cases, there is an option for users to connect to these networks manually. Moreover, if a user has already connected to a network manually, the Assistant will not connect to it automatically. You have to first click on Forget the network and then use the automatic feature.
