Though nothing has been confirmed yet, there is a possibility that the 2027 Call of Duty game will not be a part of the Modern Warfare series.
Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Modern Warfare 3, seems to have been given the responsibility to helm the next Call of Duty game that is scheduled for a 2027 release. As per recent rumors, the game could lead to the comeback of a Call of Duty subseries that would be different from the one which one expected to return. This, in turn, would result in an important series tradition getting broken down.
In the last couple of years, one has stumbled upon reports suggesting that Activision would adhere to a two-year cycle with the subseries of the franchise. As per this plan, a specific subseries could go on for two annual Call of Duty installments before another subseries takes its place. This seems to be the reason why Activision shipped two Modern Warfare games in 2022 and 2023 before prioritizing Black Ops in 2024.

Because of this two-year cycle, players find it easy to take items earned in one game to another game. Some of these items include weapons, operators and cosmetics. However, according to the information laid down in a new report, there is a good possibility of this release pattern undergoing a change in the near future.
A leaker, who identifies themselves as Hope and has an X handle by the name @TheGhostOfHope, has claimed that the Call of Duty series for the years 2026 and 2027 will be helmed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games.
What I am hearing about Sledgehammer Games future with Call of Duty:
Sledgehammer Games are currently slated to lead their own Call Of Duty in 2027. This comes after Infinity Ward's game in 2026 which is presumably MW4.

There have been speculations about a Black Ops 6 sequel launching next year. As per Hope, the 2026 entry will “presumably” be Modern Warfare 4. This, according to the leaker, will be a part of the two-year cycle strategy followed by the gaming publisher.
The leaker also spoke about the Call of Duty title scheduled to release in 2027 and said that it is not being designed as a “Year 2 Modern Warfare game” as yet. What the leaker meant is that it might not be a consecutive Modern Warfare title. If this is true, fans will witness the breaking of a recent series tradition. Last year, one witnessed the launch of Modern Warfare 3. A year before that, Modern Warfare 2 had arrived.
After claiming that the 2027 Call of Duty game will not be a back-to-back Modern Warfare entry, Hope stated that there is a possibility of it being Advanced Warfare 2 or a new chapter in the series altogether. The leaker stated that many of the plans being formulated by the gaming publisher remain unclear at the moment.

After making these claims, the leaker’s X profile was flooded with several comments and reactions. The claims offered enough food for thought and they started engaging in discussions about the gaming series.
If one goes by the comments section, one realizes that many fans believe that they will get to see an Advanced Warfare title soon. Some fans also expressed their wish to see a sequel to 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts.
