As part of the changes for the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple is said to be replacing its iPhone 17 Pro Max with the iPhone 17 Ultra.
This is not likely to be the only change in the series as the iPhone 17 Air is touted to take the place of the Plus variant.
While the Pro and Pro Max variants generally share many common features, the 17 Ultra is slated to usher in some exclusive major upgrades.
Expected Specs
For the processor, the brand will opt for a new A19 Bionic chip that will make its debut in this handset. The chip will incorporate a 2 nm processor and contribute towards efficiency and performance to a great extent.

The smartphone will be durable but lightweight with an alloy frame that is made of a combination of titanium and aluminum. The 17 Ultra will have an LTPO OLED panel of 6.6 inches in size.
Apple will incorporate a vapor chamber cooling system in the iPhone 17 Ultra. The manufacturer will also reduce the size of its Dynamic Island. The battery capacity will also be better than before although this could mean that the handset will have a little extra thickness.
While this would be the first time that the brand is opting for an Ultra nametag for its smartphone, Apple has already done so for its chips and smartwatches with the M Ultra and Apple Watch Ultra names.

As of now, there is no confirmation about the change of name yet. Apple usually launches its flagship lineup in September every year.
If it adopts the same strategy this time around as well, we can expect to hear more details about the same before the release in September 2025.
