According to a new report, Apple seems to be considering the trend of adopting a variable aperture camera system like its Android competitors.
Unlike many Android smartphone manufacturers that have already implemented this concept, Apple has yet to introduce this feature in its iPhones.
Going by a statement by renowned tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the variable aperture system will first be incorporated into the iPhone 18 lineup, specifically the iPhone 18 Pro. Although an earlier report hinted that at least one smartphone in the iPhone 17 series will feature this system, the most recent report indicates a further delay.
Advantages of Variable Aperture Camera Lenses
Variable aperture camera lenses have several advantages over fixed aperture lenses that allow the cameras to deliver a professional experience. These lenses feature an automatic adjustment of their opening size, thereby allowing users to have extra control over the depth of field and light intake.
A wide aperture works well in dimly lit environments and helps in delivering well-exposed shots by admitting more light although it cannot be denied that there will be a slight blur in the background because of a shallow depth of field.

A narrow aperture, on the other hand, is ideal in bright settings and delivers a deep depth of field and sharp images with background as well as foreground elements staying in focus.
Supplier Sources
According to the analysis by the tech analyst, there will be two primary suppliers and two secondary suppliers. The manufacturer could opt for Sunny Optical as the primary supplier and Luxshare as the secondary supplier. Apple is also expected to rely on Largan as the primary source and consider Sunny Optical as its secondary source.
The iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launch is slated to be two years from now around September 2026. With a long way to go before the official release, it is too early to confirm the mentioned details as there is sufficient time for Apple to revise its plans and make alterations to its strategies for the camera setup.
