As per the developer, the much-awaited title was announced in 2018 simply to create some excitement among fans.
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced with much fanfare at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 which took place on June 10, 2018. While launching a short teaser trailer for the game, Todd Howard, who serves as the director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, said that the pre-production work on the project has commenced and it would get an official launch post the release of Fallout 76 and Starfield.
While Fallout 76 was launched in 2018, Starfield was released in 2023. After the launch of Starfield, fans expected Bethesda to share some concrete updates on The Elder Scrolls VI. Since both the big titles had now been released, fans hoped that they would not have to wait a long time for The Elder Scrolls VI to arrive.

While The Elder Scrolls VI has been delayed and Bethesda has failed to share any update about it despite consistent requests from fans, the studio did not anticipate things to pan out like this. This is something which a former Bethesda developer has confirmed.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which was launched in the year 2011, was received very well by fans. While the game continues to enjoy a lot of popularity, one cannot overlook the fact that it has been close to 15 years since it came out. When The Elder Scrolls VI was announced in 2018, fans believed the game should be ready in the next 4-5 years. It has been 7 years and there is no sign of the game. The worst part is that Bethesda has not shared any update or information that could give fans some idea about when they could expect it to arrive.
Bruce Nesmith, who has worked as a developer with Bethesda in the past, has stated that the studio’s objective behind announcing the game in 2018 was to appease the fans. Howard and the team, as per the former developer, were against the idea of the game being announced so early. They would have ideally wanted a short gap between the announcement and release of the game.

While giving an interview to MinnMax, the former developer stated that announcing The Elder Scrolls VI in 2018 and then not sharing anything about it for years had an adverse effect on the credibility of Bethesda. Nesmith further said that announcing a game years in advance and delaying it for a long time proves to be disastrous for any gaming studio.
While making a formal announcement about The Elder Scrolls VI in 2018, Bethesda might have hoped that it would be able to get the game ready in the next few years. That, as one can see now, has not happened. If the studio does not share any updates in the near future, there is a possibility of the buzz surrounding the game crashing down eventually.
