Microsoft Corp. is in the process of completing the final steps in the process of acquiring Activision Blizzard Inc.
The gaming publisher will be launching the next three games in the popular Call of Duty franchise on PlayStation and Xbox.
Much before the $69 billion acquisition came through, Activision had decided to release the next couple of Call of Duty games on Sony’s console. This information was shared to the media by four people working in the company. They spoke about this on the condition of anonymity as they were not supposed to divulge this information.
Infinity Ward is developing the new version of Call of Dutythat is slated to release this year. It will be followed by another game in the series that is being developed by Treyarch. Both Infinity Ward and Treyarch are studios that are owned by Activision. Fans should also look forward to a new version of Call of Duty Warzone, that wonderful free-to-play game that was launched two years back in 2020.
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft, recently stated that he has had an elaborate conversation with Sony about how this franchise should be taken forward. Taking to Twitter, he confirmed that the company will honor all the ‘existing agreements’ that Activision had got into prior to the acquisition. He further stated that Sony has been an integral part to the gaming industry and they plan to strengthen its association with it.
Though fans have not been given complete clarity about what these‘existing agreements’ are, Microsoft could talk about them more openly when the acquisition process reaches its final stage.
In the past, Call of Duty games were always launched on PC, PlayStation and Xbox as these were the mediums that were known to bring in the maximum revenue for the company. In the recent times, Call of Duty games have been promoted hugely on the PlayStation store. Activision had struck many important marketing deals for the game to ensure that it gets good visibility. Every game in the Call of Duty franchise has emerged as one of the highest selling games on PS4 and PS5.
Despite the recent developments, there is not enough clarity about the release date of the next Call of Duty games. According to Microsoft, since the scale of the acquisition is very big, it could take them anywhere between 6-18 months to close it. Whether the next Call of Duty games will release before the acquisition is finalizes or prior to that is something time will tell.
