Google Nexus 5X Price Slashed to Just $199, But There is a Catch

Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P

If you have been dreaming of a chance to get yourself last year’s Google Nexus 5X, the time is now. This is true because the search engine giant has just unveiled a promotional offer that sees the price of the phone drop to a mere $199.

This news comes at a time when the company has also announced that the usually invitation-based mobile service, Project Fi, no longer requires users to be invited to the platform in order to join. The Google Project Fi, announced in April 2015, is a new mobile service that has been rolling out in phases over the past year. However, it only works with a number of Nexus smartphones, for instance, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 as well as Nexus 6P.

In order to take advantage of the latest promotion from Google, you need to subscribe to Project Fi, otherwise, you will still have to pay the usual price of $349 for the Nexus 5X. Once you’ve subscribed to the mobile service, you will be able to use your newly acquired Nexus smartphone to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi hotspots and cellular data on your phone.

When Project Fi finds out that a given Wi-Fi connection is proving to be stronger than the current cellular connection, it will automatically switch to the better connection in order to keep providing you with the required internet speeds.

Nexus 5X

With the LG-made Nexus 5X, you will have a very decent smartphone that features a 5.2-inch IPS LCD screen with Full HD resolution, Snapdragon 808 and a RAM of 2GB. The phone has two storage variants – 16GB and 32GB – and also features some of the latest technologies, among them a fingerprint sensor and USB Type C. The rear of the phone has a 12.3MP snapper while the front comes with a decent 5MP selfie camera.

Project Fi is available on Sprint and T-Mobile

Google’s Project Fi is currently available for users of Nexus devices with Sprint or T-Mobile wireless carriers. As mentioned earlier, the service was launched about a year ago and since then; it could only be accessed through an invitation system. With Google seemingly looking to accelerate the sales of Nexus 5X as well as expand its mobile service, the need to eliminate the invite-based system on Project Fi was inevitable.

Available Project Fi plans

If you plan on joining Project Fi courtesy of the new Google Nexus 5X promo, you will have several plans to choose from. On the lower end, there is a monthly subscription fee of $20 where you get unlimited talk and messages. 1GB of data will cost you $10 more. If your normal usage is 3GB of data, you’ll pay an extra $30. However, if you end the month having only spent 2GB of the available 3GB, you will only be charged $20 for the data used. Cool huh!
