The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are offered in two storage options – a base model of 32GB and a high-end version of 128GB. None of them has a microSD card storage, just like their predecessors, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.
While you might think going for the high-end 128GB variant will solve your storage problems, you may still find yourself needing to free up some more space on your phone so as to bring in more stuff. If you have been through this, you should know how tough it can be when it comes to going through your installed apps and stored files to delete some of them so as to free up space. It is hard to decide which one stays and which one goes, however, it seems developers of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL software were also victims of this storage menace.
There is a new Smart Storage feature on the Google Pixel phones. Apparently, you can simply allow the feature to execute its duties automatically while you sit back and watch. It runs in the background periodically, but there is also room to have things done manually.
So, which way will you go – the automatic way or the manual way? Either way, the Smart Storage feature is a handy addition when it comes to memory management. Here’s how to use it.
If you choose the automatic way, the better. Here, you just need to open the Settings app and hit the Storage>Manage Storage options. When inside this menu, you will see the option to enable or disable Smart Storage. When enabled, the feature will remove photos and videos that you had previously backed up on Google Photos. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t check the photos again, but you will have to redownload them.
You also have the option to set the time taken before the feature is triggered to clear the junk files on your Google Pixel or Pixel XL. There is either 30 days, 60 days or 90 days – pick what suits you best.
To do things manually, stick to the same Smart Storage feature and check out its Settings. In there, you’ll find an option to “Free up space now.” When you want to manually create more storage space by clearing files, hit this option.
Either way, you will end up freeing up more space on your Google Pixel and Pixel XL. Be notified that while the automatic way will mainly take care of photos and videos, taking the manual direction will take you a step further. You will be able to clean your phone in a much better way using this option, including getting rid of downloaded apps and files.
