How to Improve Computer Security? Recommendations from an Expert

If someone has a home computer then their goal is to always keep it secure from viruses and ransomwares. While many of us don’t know where to begin from, some of us don’t know who’s advice to rely on. I have extensive experience in improving computer security, here are some tips I can recommend to improve your computer security.

Always have a secure network connection

All internet service providers, cable modems, and digital subscriber lines provide several levels of security. However, it is very crucial to secure your router in the first place as it is the first and the foremost device that receives information from the internet. Many internet service providers offer a free cable modem and router once you sign up for them. Make sure that they have a decent firewall system before connecting it to your home computer.

Install a secure firewall system

A firewall is a software or a hardware that allows safe information into your home computer and disallows malicious viruses and information that might corrupt your computer. A firewall controls the flow of information between two points, i.e., the internet and your home computer. Almost all modern home computer operating systems have a built-in firewall system. In addition to these operating systems, most of the routers also have a firewall system

Always install and use Anti-spyware and Anti-virus system

The use of anti-spyware and anti-virus software helps in detecting the presence of malware or malicious virus in your home computer system. Antivirus software is highly crucial for any person or business that wants to keep their personal data secure and protected.

The malware is detected when the anti-spyware or antivirus software looks at the patterns of files that are stored on your home computer. Also, from the business point of view, your company’s reputation might get in danger if some customer’s private data gets leaked online and the consequences that follow will be serious.

There might be instances where this anti-virus software might slow down your home computer’s performance but that is better than the risk of getting your home computer infected with a virus. Here you can find a list of antiviruses that help protect your data. Furthermore, the antivirus software also needs to be updated on a regular basis for it to continue working seamlessly.

Get rid of unnecessary programs

Don’t make your home computer a storage room for loads of unwanted and unnecessary programs. Go through your computer software and check for a program’s specific information if you don’t know what it does, then simply get rid of it.

By uninstalling unwanted or unnecessary programs you will be automatically increasing your hard drive space and speed of the computer as these unwanted programs will stop running in the background.

Keep your web browser secure

When you install a web browser on a new computer, they don’t usually have default security settings. Hence, you need to secure your web browser as it is a very pivotal step in maintaining your home computer system’s security. Make sure you use the most trusted and the safest web browsers of all.

Follow security practices

There are a few simple and easy things that you can follow to keep your computer’s security in check.

  • Always be careful about email attachments or untrusted links. Never open attachments unless it is coming in from a trusted and reliable source. Always open them only if you are certain that those attachments are safe and not loaded with malware or virus.
  • Be extremely cautious when you’re entering sensitive or private information on a web browser. Sometimes it may seem that you’re entering the information on a trusted website but they might actually be the work of a hacker.
  • Always create and use strong passwords. Create passwords that contain more than eight characters and are a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, special characters, and numbers.

Allow the pop-up blocker in your web browser

Always enable the pop-up blocker in your web browser. You can do this by opening your web browser and then clicking the three dots on the top right-hand corner of the web browser. Select ‘Settings’ from the drop-down list and then choose ‘Advanced’ from the menu that appears later. Then make sure that the pop-up blocker is enabled on the web browser. Now you’re free from all the pop-ups that might cause disruption to your work.

Keep your system updated

Make sure that your home computer system is always up to date. This includes updates of all your software programs, anti-virus programs, and anti-spyware programs. Most of the software vendors introduce updates to fix the weaknesses or problems in their software programs.

On the other hand, some updates in your computer system might be important security patches and you should never ever miss out on them. Never ignore any system updates as they might contain crucial security patches.

Updates are not only meant for adding new features to the software but also for bridging the gap between any security patches. So if you ignore these updates, you end up ignoring your security updates which threaten your home computer.

Never use public Wi-fi

Never ever trust a public Wifi. A public Wifi can easily be hacked. Hackers can easily steal your personal data and passwords over the public Wi-fi connection that you’ve opted to use.

Even if you’re opting for the public wifi connection then make sure to surf the web on encrypted websites that begin with HTTPS because these keep your data protected. Apart from this, always remember to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) if you decide to surf the internet with the help of a public-wifi.

Following these simple steps to keep your home computer safe should not be very difficult, as prevention is always better than cure. It is better to go through some hectic practices in order to avoid that greater risk in the future. Hence, following the above-mentioned tips will help you in improving your computer security.
