The Huawei Honor 5X is a great buy for anyone with tight budgets, but the phone has just got better after a new discount on third-party retailers brought down the price to $160.
The phone had been on sale for $190 on third-party retailers like Newggg. The unlocked a silver variant of the device is now listed at $160, which also is a significant discount compared to the $200 price on the official Huawei site. Launched in 2015, Honor 5X may not have the class leading specifications anymore but it is a great value for money at this price point.
The device offers a 5.5-inch screen with full HD resolution. Even though it does not offer AMOLED technology at this price, the IPS panels should be just about fine for regular usage. One of the small disadvantages of the Honor 5X is the user interface. The phone employs the EMUI 4.0 user interface on top of the android 6.0 operating system. However, one can always go for custom ROMs given the flexibility of the android OS. Third-party ROMs will not feel any strain on theHonor 5X due to the phone’s snapdragon 615 processor which is adequately powerful. There is also 3 GB of RAM on the KIW-AL10 variants.
Internal storage is one of the disappointing aspects of Honor 5X especially since this is 2016. Even though the phone can support additional memory cards of up to 256 GB through microSD cards, internal storage being low means that users will have to rely heavily upon android marshmallow’s ability to transfer apps from internal storage to the SD card. This cumbersome feature could have been easily avoided with more memory on-board.
A rear camera with a 13-megapixel sensor is being assisted with aspects like LED flash. This f/2.0 lens is a specially built for all situations while the front facing camera has a five-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 lens. It means that the phone camera may not be at its best in lowlight conditions. The rear camera is letdown only by its inability to record 4K videos. Honor 5X is one of the few phones in the market with support for DTS encoding. The fingerprint sensor on the device may not be the quickest, but Honor 5X is one of the few phones in this price range to offer this feature. The phone has a decent sized 3000 mAh battery.
