Created by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson and published by Mojang in November 2011, Minecraft is a popular sandbox video game.
However, the Swedish programmer sold Mojang to Microsoft in the September of 2014 for a reported 2.5 billion dollars. In March this year, Microsoft announced that virtual reality was coming to Minecraft and it would be fans on Windows 10 Edition to benefit first.
Back then, Microsoft announced that Oculus Rift VR would be supported in Minecraft version 0.15.6 but it’s now official that the VR support will be released next week which is earlier than expected. One of the Minecraft developers, Tommaso Checchi, made an official statement on his Twitter account confirming the rumors.A tweet that was emphatically showered in with over 1000 likes and 180 retweets.
Minecraft fans with Windows 10 up and running on their computers (PC or Mac) and of course have purchased the Oculus Rift VR headset can now comfortably sit back and wait for next week to play Minecraft over the technology. The edition goes for$9.99 at Microsoft physical stores, but those owning the game on Windows PC or Mac will be spared the cost. The adaptation is also scheduled for Oculus Store in the future.
Mojang and Oculus did not have the best relationship when the former was still under Persson. The rift between the two corporations led to Mojang cancellation of Minecraft with Oculus Rift support. However, the game has taken a different diversion and friendship has been rebuilt under the new management. As a result, Microsoft-owned Mojang has collaborated with The Rift creators, Oculus, in building the forthcoming Windows 10 Minecraft variant with the VR support. Fans who had been itching to experience virtual reality have smiles plastered on their faces after it was confirmed Minecraft Windows 10 build will be marking its one year anniversary with support for Oculus Rift.
For Minecraft first timers, the game involves building structures out of textured cubes. In the course, you will have to explore and gather resources through craft and combat. To expand your built village, you will attack your opponent’s villages stealing resources from their chests. Likewise, you will have to protect your village against attackers from other players’ villages.
For the Rift, the gadget is a powerful machine that requires an equally powerful PC to run smoothly. This means some PCs cannot power the headset. Consequently, gamers will have to upgrade their graphic cards or purchase a more powerful that meets the minimum required standards for the VR. Here are the minimum specs for Oculus Rift PC; Intel Core i5 4590 CPU or better, 8GB RAM or greater, HDMI 1.3 video port, at least 2 USB 3.0 ports, GeForce GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 Graphic card or better and Windows 7 SPI 64 bit or newer.
Also, Minecraft has builds for several platforms. PCs builds are available for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux, for mobile handsets there are adaptations for Windows Phone, iOS, and Android, while the console edition includes versions for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, finally there is also a Universal Windows Platform.
