The year 2017 is already on fire as far as the smartphone world is concerned. We saw quite a number of handsets unveiled at the CES, among them the ZenFone AR and a few days later the HTC U Ultra was also unveiled.
The biggest mobile tech show on earth is currently happening in Barcelona, Spain and here. We’ve already witnessed the launch of quite an interesting set of flagship phones. We’ve seen the LG G6, Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, Sony Xperia XZs and Xperia XZ Premium, but with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5 or even Google Pixel 2 yet to be unveiled, it appears that the MWC 2017 is just the beginning of an interesting year in the smartphone world.
While details of Samsung Galaxy S8 are all over, including the launch date, not so much has been leaked when it comes to OnePlus 5 and Google Pixel 2, but looking at how things unfolded in 2016, the former will be unveiled earlier than the latter. In fact, the latest rumors concern this OnePlus 3T successor and given the standards that have been set by the 3T, the Chinese OEM is reportedly at task to ensure the upcoming OnePlus 5 is one of the best out there, if not the best.
According to the new rumor, the OnePlus 3T successor will indeed be known as OnePlus 5, something that has a lot to do with Chinese traditions and beliefs. Here, locals believe that the number 4 is unlucky, but this is not all. OnePlus One was released in 2014, marking the company’s first flagship device in the smartphone world. This device was succeeded by OnePlus 2 and in 2016, two flagships were also unveiled – OnePlus 3 and 3T. Technically, this makes the 2017 flagship the fifth edition, hence the OnePlus 5 name tag, but at some point the company had to unveil a midrange, OnePlus X.
If you thought Samsung Galaxy S8 will be the only device borrowing looks from the 2016 Galaxy S7 Edge, well, surprise! Apparently, OnePlus 5 will also ship with a curved dual-edge screen that could possibly be 5.5 inches in size. Under the hood, the phone will ship with either 6GB or 8GB RAM, with the high-end model packing a whopping 256GB of internal storage, but the 64GB storage option will still be available. Like previous rumors had pointed out, the latest report claims that the upcoming OnePlus 5 could also come with a ceramic body similar to the Xiaomi Mi MIX.
While previous reports have suggested that OnePlus 5 will come with a Snapdragon 835 SoC, this new rumor doesn’t go into processor specifics. However, looking at the company’s calendar with respect to the launch of the OnePlus 3, the 2017 flagship should come at a time when there’ll be plenty of Snapdragon 835 chipsets in supply – somewhere around June. But as for the camera specs, the rumor says that the back will ship with a huge 23MP shooter whereas the selfie camera will keep the 16MP lens that came with the upgraded OnePlus 3T.
All these will be housed in a nicely designed body that combines aluminum and glass, which suggests that OnePlus 5 will be ditching the full metal design used in 2016. Speaking of 2016, the two models unveiled had decent battery life thanks to the 3000mAh and 3400mAh units used on the OnePlus 3 and 3T, respectively. However, the report says that OnePlus will be stepping up this battery capacity to 4000mAh and this will be charged via a USB Type-C port with support for fast charging technology.
Software-wise, the OnePlus 5 will be powered by Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, but whether there’ll be OxygenOS or HydrogenOS on top is still unclear. On the downside, the phone’s price could take a twist and slightly move away from the budget-friendly environment, so don’t be surprised if the asking price started at $500. We should know more details sooner or later. Keep following!
