Samsung is a renowned world leader when it comes to smartphone production and selling.
The company has a wide range of devices on offer, ranging from the top of the tier Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, running down through the likes of Samsung Galaxy J and Galaxy A series as well as others that are hardly known to the world, for instance, Samsung Galaxy XCover series.
The first unit of the Galaxy XCover series showed up in 2011. A couple of years later the successor to this device was announced and it was baptized Samsung Galaxy XCover2. Last year saw the South Korean tech giant come in with the third version of this phone and named it Samsung Galaxy XCover3. Featuring military-grade toughness, the Galaxy XCover3 came with Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box.
Samsung has been busy with rolling out software updates to its compatible devices. But rather than come in with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update for last year’s Samsung Galaxy XCover3, the company has other ideas. It seems there is a completely new variant of the XCover3. While it is not the successor to the phone, probably the Galaxy XCover4, it comes in with major changes as far as software is concerned.
Last year’s Samsung Galaxy XCover3 never got to see Android 5.0 Lollipop and it was nowhere near the Marshmallow update schedule. Interestingly, Samsung has decided to unveil a new XCover3 running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. This is great news for those who had fallen in love with this rugged device.
Spotting a similar look and design as the rugged Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, the Galaxy XCover3 was meant to be the cheaper version of the former. Now that the device has a new variant that is powered by Android Marshmallow, there is no doubt that it is even better than before.
There are rumors that a military-tough Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is in the making. If you can’t keep up with the waiting, the new variant of Samsung Galaxy XCover3 is a worthy option to look at. The phone comes with water resistance capabilities rated at IP67 as well as MIL-STD 810G standard that preserves its rugged nature.
You might be a little disappointed with the specs under the hood, especially if you are eager to see the new Samsung Galaxy S7 Active. The Galaxy XCover3 Value Edition packs the same specs as the 2015 model. In addition to a 4.5-inch WQVGA screen, you will also come across a quad-core SoC clocked at a speed of 1.2GHz and a RAM of 1.5GB. Onboard storage is just 8GB, but it can be expanded using a microSD card. As far as the camera is concerned, the Galaxy XCover3 only manages a 5MP sensor on the rear and a 2MP selfie camera. The phone’s battery unit is capped at 2000mAh, which should see you through a full day with moderate usage.
Samsung Galaxy XCover3 Value Edition – availability and pricing
There is no mention of when this Samsung Galaxy XCover3 Value Edition will be coming to the U.S. and other markets. But hopefully, it finds its way here. The new edition of XCover3 is currently available in the Netherlands at a price of $259.
