Sony Chief Concedes that Oculus Rift is Better than PlayStation VR

Oculus Rift

Virtual Reality is no longer a dream but is definitely upon us. While there may be many companies out there trying to work their way into this booming field, currently we only have three major players in the industry.

Facebook-owned Oculus VR unveiled one of the best VR headsets in the shape of Oculus Rift. On the other hand, renowned smartphone maker HTC came in with the Vive while Japan’s Sony has PlayStation VR. The HTC Vive is with no doubt a target for the high-end users. It’s not such a simple device; however, the degree of tracking you receive is something none of the other two can match. This doesn’t mean the Rift is a poor device, but it just puts it in the middle. The major issue here is that it requires a pricey computer to work with, something that might make it hard for the device to be termed as “mid-range.”

As far as PlayStation VR is concerned, it is with no doubt the most accessible. Unlike the other two which still require PCs that could cost you thousands of dollars, you only need a PlayStation 4 worth about $350 to use the PlayStation VR. You probably already own a PlayStation 4, so that makes you even better positioned to use a PlayStation VR than going for the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

Oculus Rift has better VR than PlayStation VR

As if to concede defeat, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Masayasu Ito recently admitted that there is no arguing about the high-end nature of the Oculus Rift when compared to PlayStation VR. However, the fact that the device requires a pricey PC in order to use it makes the Sony PlayStation VR a much better option. In short, the PlayStation VR is not meant for the high-end users; instead, Sony’s target is to capture the mass market.

It might not be easy to tell the differences between these gadgets since both of them are heavily dependent on software and less on hardware. However, considering that the Rift will be working with a very powerful PC running on the most advanced hardware, it might be a better performer in the real world than the PlayStation VR. But it is still too early to tell. In fact, nobody has the best idea of what the best VR experiences look like since this technology is still very young. Regardless of the hardware in use, you’ll definitely see something you haven’t seen before.

Of course, there are many who will prefer to go for the Oculus Rift while others will stick with PlayStation VR. It all depends on preferences because each of these headsets has its own set of advantages.
