To ensure cross-play happens smoothly, the team is making some major technical changes.

The fourth and last episode of The Elder Scrolls Online podcast gave fans some fresh updates and made them aware of what they can expect next from the game. The podcast can be best described as a special series put together by Kinda Funny Gamecast, Game Director Rich Lambert and ZeniMax Online’s Head of Studio Matt Firor. In the final episode, it was revealed that the gaming studio is making some important changes to the underlying technology of the game with the goal of bringing in a cross-play feature in the game soon.

In the podcast episode, Matt Firor, Head of Studio at ZeniMax, stated that the team is working on “underlying tech changes” that would pave the way for the implementation of cross-play in the game.

Firor said that everybody realizes how important it is and therefore, is working diligently towards implementing it as soon as possible. He further added that since the team started working on the game way back in 2007, a lot of changes and upgrades were implemented along the way.

In an interview given a few months ago, Rich Lambert, who serves as a Game Director at ZeniMax, stated that the team has never been against the idea of implementing cross-play. While putting together the game in 2007, Lambert said, the team took several important decisions that are difficult to reverse now.

As per Lambert, this one is “a huge technical challenge to solve”. Since every major gaming studio is taking cross-play seriously, Lambert believes it will be implemented in The Elder Scrolls Online sooner rather than later.

Cross-platform play or cross-play, refers to a player’s ability to use a variety of video game hardware to play with each other at the same time. While cross-play has become quite popular over the years, it has also faced numerous challenges.

Often, the control schemes between PCs and consoles could be vastly different. Sometimes, the online services used on consoles make it difficult for this feature to be implemented.
