Over the past two or so years, Google has shown the world that having a quality camera on a smartphone isn’t all about the hardware, but it has more to do with the software.
It all started with the Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, two phones that have been on the market for more than two years now. The two, as you already know, cater to two different market segments – premium and budget segments. While it’s easy to replace the Nexus 6P with another phone that matches or even beats the camera of the phone, the same is not true when it comes to the Google Nexus 5X.
Priced at under $400, the Nexus 5X still rocks one of the best smartphone cameras on the market right now, two years since it was first unveiled. We all know how smartphone technology moves fast, but no OEM has managed to beat the Nexus 5X’s outstanding camera in the budget segment. Of course, there is a huge chunk of phones that are priced at $400 and below and are packed with top-notch hardware specs and some cool features, for instance, the Moto X4 or even Xiaomi Mi A1, but none of them can beat the camera quality you get on the 5X.
Perhaps this top-notch performance can be attributed to the flagship Snapdragon 800 series processor that runs the show, but this won’t stand when equally or more powerful devices are in question, for instance, Xiaomi Mi 5, Mi 6, OnePlus 3T or even the newest OnePlus 5. In terms of raw quality, the Google Nexus 5X is easily up there with other flagships.
One thing that many smartphone cameras fail to do is deliver quality shots in low-light conditions; however, this is something the Nexus 5X does so perfectly. The same goes for video quality in the same scenarios, where you’ll see true colors instead of choppy frame rates that characterize videos captured by the likes of Xiaomi Mi A1 in low-light conditions.
