The 2018 Aston Martin DB11 Volante has been officially revealed as the company confirmed the specifications of the model and how it differs from the existing variants.
The Volante is a convertible version of the sports car which is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2018.
In terms of overall structure and design, the DB11 Volante is very much the same as the DB11 Coupe because it is constructed on the same aluminum body with some slight tweaks to the shape. Under the bonnet, the car is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 twin turbo engine. Surprisingly, the engineers didn’t opt for a V12 engine and there is no word on a future model with the more potent powertrain.
For sports car fans who love a powerful engine, the lack of a V12 Volante may be slightly disappointing but it’s what the manufacturer offers. The power generated by the engine is controlled using an eight-speed paddle shift automatic gearbox. Being a convertible, the main component of this car is the roof.
The engineers at Aston Martin has gone with a traditional fabric roof. The eight-layered roof material is quite sturdy and could withstand some demanding weather conditions. It also makes it easier to fold and the roof takes about 14 seconds to fold whereas it needs 16 seconds to raise and cover the top. As with most other convertible models, the roof can be operated at a speed up to 31mph.
Based on the tests conducted by Aston Martin, the durability of the roof is rated up to 10 years of usage as they have used it in over 100,000 cycles in varying weather conditions. The overall weight of the car has increased by 115kg because the weight lost by the roof should be compensated in the body of the car. However, the 2018 Aston Martin DB11 Volante sports a soft top which is 26kgs lighter than the previous DB9 Volante model.
The varying weights and the changes made in the car has led to a slight dip in the overall performance. The new DB11 Volante can go up to 187mph whereas its acceleration capability to go from 0 to 62mph is at 4.1 seconds which is slightly higher than the hard-top version.
All the luxury components found in the hard-top model can be found in the convertible. The interior is largely covered with leather material while the outlining is done using Alcantara lining. Priced at £159,900, the 2018 Aston Martin DB11 Volante is heading to store in the first quarter.
