Google has officially confirmed that 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL owners don’t have any time limit.

They can continue to use their free, unlimited storage on Google Photos to save their photos and videos.

After the grand flagship smartphone launch event, a slight confusion prevailed as how storage works for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphone owners. Google came up to clarify that they do have a time restriction. Compared to older phones, the newer models are capable of capturing 4K videos and images which will occupy more storage than before.

Considering these factors and in order to focus more on evolving technology, the company confirmed that Pixel 2 owners will be able to save original quality photographs and videos until 2020. From 2021 onwards, all the files saved on Google Photos will be stored in high-resolution quality which indirectly denotes that it may not be stored in 4K or 2K resolution but rather in HD format.

When this announcement was made, existing Pixel owners were left in a turmoil as they were unsure whether they should take a backup of their photographs and videos. They were also not sure whether saved files will be lowered in resolution after a certain time limit. The manufacturer didn’t make them wait long.

Instead, Google has now officially confirmed that there is no time limit for them. The 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL owners can continue to save all their photos, videos in their original quality. There is no restriction on file size or storage space. Besides, the 2020 deadline is applicable only for those who purchase the Pixel 2 phone and save files through it.

Previous-gen owners can continue to enjoy all the benefits the Google Photos has to offer. Everyone else who love the service can save high quality photos for free on the storage platform but if they like to keep all their files in original quality, they have to pay a yearly subscription fee. For Pixel owners, there are no extra costs involved which is a great value-added service offered by Google.

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners can continue to save their photos on the cloud storage. The previously saved files will be in original quality whereas those saved after 2020 will be uploaded in high-res quality which may not concern an average user too much unless you are a professional who needs the best resolution in all your files.
