The map emphasizes retrofuturism and would give players the chance to explore quick gunfights.

Activision has just unveiled the new Area 99 map that will soon be a part of Call of Duty: Season 1. For the uninitiated, Call of Duty: Season 1 starts post the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The new Call of Duty: Warzone map can be described as the birthplace of the Nuketown map which has been very popular and prominently featured in Black Ops entries released in the past.

As Black Ops 6 launches, Warzone shall see several major alterations coming its way. Both titles will be supportive of the new omnidirectional movement system of Call of Duty. The Call of Duty NEXT event offered a confirmation about backpacks and Modern Warfare 3’s Guardian and Mosquito Drone scorestreaks being removed from Warzone. Players, however, will keep having access to weapons originally featured in Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. Players should also be sure about new maps and modes being a part of Warzone Season 1.

Inspired by the “rapid and unrelenting gameplay” of the Nuketown multiplayer map, Area 99 has been designed as a Warzone resurgence map. This particular map features lore and information about Nuketown’s origins and a lot of other interesting content. It features major roadways that players can use to move around on foot. They also have the option of using vehicles to find their way through areas like the Cooling Towers, Reactor, Nuketown shipping facility and Warehouse. Some of the other POIs, like the Bunker and the Test Site, can be found linked by open sand trenches, wiring and pipes. As is the case with other maps in Warzone, a majority of gunfights happen towards the center of the map. This is the same area where the Reactor POI can be found.

According to Treyarch, Area 99 is a “celebration of the retrofuturism art style”. Players, therefore, will come across a lot of interesting architecture and designs stemmed out of the aesthetic governing the diners and classic media prevalent in the 1950s. The map also has an official mascot in the form of “Archie Atom.” This mascot can be seen on several billboards and signs scattered across the Resurgence map.

As per the official lore designed by Warzone, Area 99 was abandoned way back in March 1962 and since then, it has been decaying and leaking radiation slowly. The radiation, however, should not dissuade players from exploring the map and looking for new opponents to eliminate.
