WhatsApp, the most popular messaging application in the world, has thrown in a secret update that makes life for users a lot harder than before.
Even though everyone is probably in some WhatsApp group, not every group member is a keen follower of everything that happens in a group. Some groups can tend to be annoying with regular notifications coming in at will. As a result, WhatsApp added the ability to mute notifications such that one only checks the group when s/he needs to.
But with the latest WhatsApp update, this feature has been tweaked such that even muting group chats will not stop you from receiving group chat notifications. Apparently, it is now possible to tag someone in a group chat, something that means the tagged person must be notified. This is regardless of whether or not you have turned off the notifications from the group in question. The feature is available on both Android and iOS platforms, but there is no word on when it will be coming to the desktop version.
Like many of us here, this move is not the best, especially if you belong to many WhatsApp groups that you probably didn’t ask to join but at the same time feel it is rude to leave. For those who are part of productive groups that are also positive in many aspects, this feature will be a huge welcome for you as far as keeping track of meaningful conversations is concerned.
How it works
To tag someone in a WhatsApp group chat, just type the “@” symbol and follow it with the name of the person you want to tag. There is the option of picking this name from the list of contacts that pops up. Furthermore, the feature allows users to tag more than one person in a message and to makes things even better, WhatsApp has activated the feature to include the ability to tag those who are not part of your contacts list, but you still share the same group.
This update adds to recent WhatsApp updates that added features that let users quote other messages in a group chat so as to clarify what they are responding to. The same group chats were also expanded a while ago to include up to 256 members as opposed to the previous 100.
Even though this new update could be a blessing for some, those who had decided to mute group chat notifications so as to avoid unnecessary disturbances will have it rough as this will be no more.
