The Coolpad Max and the Xiaomi Mi 5 are among the mid range smartphones launched in the first half of 2016.
While the Coolpad offering was launched in April, Xiaomi brought out its handset a couple of months earlier in February. The gadgets have some really good configurations that are worth looking into. Even though Coolpad declares that it is not competing against Xiaomi for the success of its device, analyzing the two smartphones makes an interesting comparative study. Both phablets support dual SIMs with GSM connection and standby mode of operation.
Dimensions, Weight and Body Material
The Max smartphone has a size of 152 x 75.5 x 7.6mm and weighs 170g. In comparison, the Mi 5 handset has dimensions of 144.50 x 69.20 x 7.25mm with a weight of 129g. The Coolpad Max has a full metal body whereas the Xiaomi Mi 5 has chamfered edges and a glass body supported with the help of a metal frame. The latter smartphone has a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 back panel. Neither of the devices uses plastic or polycarbonate as their body material to refrain from giving the smartphones a cheap look.
Verdict: With the decision to stay off plastic for their construction, both Coolpad and Xiaomi smartphones look really classy and elegant. But, the full metal body results in giving the Max a more premium look. Yet, the fact that the Coolpad gadget is overall quite bigger than the Xiaomi counterpart makes it difficult to hold in hand or fit into pocket. In comparison, the Mi 5 is really compact and fits both in your hand and pocket with ease.
Screen Display, Pixel Resolution and Density
Sporting an overall bigger size, the Coolpad Max has a slightly bigger screen of 5.5 inches than the Xioami Mi 5 that has a 5.15-inch screen. In addition, the Coolpad screen is a little more curved than the Xiaomi screen. Interestingly, they both use Full HD screens with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 display panels and IPS LCD display technologies for wide viewing angles. Another noteworthy aspect is that even as the two screens deploy 1920 x 1080 pixel resolutions, the Max features 401ppi pixel density in contrast to the 428ppi pixel density of the Mi 5.
Verdict: As can be seen, the major difference between the two smartphones is only in the screen size and pixel density. With a smaller screen size and greater pixel density, the Xiaomi device undoubtedly wins the bet with clearer, crisper and brighter picture and text displays.
Front and Rear Shooters
The rear (primary) shooter in the Coolpad handset is a 13MP camera whilst the Xiaomi smartphone uses a 16MP snapper for the same. The two cameras support dual tone dual LED flash functionality. Even as the former camera is known for its auto focus and phase detection, the highlight of the latter camera is its optical image stabilization capability apart from the standard features of smartphone cameras. While the front (secondary) snapper of the Coolpad Max is a 5MP camera, the equivalent camera in the Xiaomi Mi 5 is a 4MP shooter. Unlike the rear snappers, both front snappers do not use flash.
Both front and back cameras of the Max and Mi 5 record 1080p videos @ 30 fps, even as the back camera of the Xiaomi smartphone additionally records 2160p videos @ 30 fps and 720p videos @ 120 fps.
Verdict: With a better pixel value and rendition of optical image stabilization, the Xiaomi Mi 5 provides better quality shots both in normal and low lighting situations. However, if you are more interested in selfies and video chats, you are likely to enjoy the performance of the Coolpad Max a little more.
Hardware, Memory and Software Details
The Max has a 1.5GHz octa core processor. This is substituted by a 1.3GHz quad core processor in the Max that is essentially two dual core processors. Similarly, the 4GB RAM of the Coolpad handset is replaced by 3GB RAM by Xiaomi. Discussing about the internal storage, the former gadget has 64GB inbuilt storage that can be increased by the same amount with a memory card. To compensate for not being able to increase the existing storage, the Xiaomi smartphone presents itself in both 32GB and 64GB options of internal storage. Both smartphones are Android gadgets with a difference in the versions loaded. The Coolpad Max is installed with Lollipop, whereas the Xiaomi Mi 5 is loaded with the latest OS, Marshmallow. Each handset additionally incorporates its manufacturer’s very own skin for user customization. This is Cool UI 8.0 in the Max and MIUI 7 in the Mi 5.
Verdict: When the performance and internal storage criteria are taken into account, the Coolpad device is a more feasible option with a better clocking frequency and more RAM and storage. But to take advantages of the latest features of Android, you might want to think of considering the Xiaomi gadget.
The battery is not removable in either of the handsets. However, the Coolpad Max uses a 2,800 mAh battery that is replaced by a 3,000 mAh battery in the Xiaomi Mi 5.
Verdict: With a bigger screen and a smaller battery, the battery life in the Max smartphone is lesser than the one used in the Mi5.
