Early Christmas for Nokia 8 users as HMD begins rolling out December’s Android security patch, still no Android 8.1

Android 8.0 Oreo Update is Rolling Out to Nokia 8

In addition to promising competitive pricing for its Android phones, HMD Global also promised that all Nokia phones will receive timely software updates to match what Google does with the Pixel and Nexus phones.

As far as software development is concerned, it’s never such an easy thing to keep up with such promises. But from the look of things, the Finnish company is actually living up to its words, at least when it comes to monthly security updates.

Although it’s now more than two weeks since Google published the official December Android security bulletin, it’s not such a bad timing for the Nokia 8 to receive the latest security patch. Users of the phone will be enjoying their Christmas rest assured that the phone is safe from any potential harm, but there’s still no Android 8.1 Oreo to match the likes of Google Pixel and Nexus 6P, which have already received the OTA update to the new OS.

On the brighter side, the Nokia 8 is already installed with Android 8.0 Oreo, making it one of the few devices that have received the OTA update thus far. However, matching Google as far as rolling out major OS upgrades is still proving to be an uphill task for HMD, but as we all know, there isn’t so much of a difference the newer Android 8.1 Oreo brings over the original v8.0.

Nokia 8

As per the company’s changelog, the Nokia 8 will only be getting the new security patch, but as usual, there are also some hidden bug fixes and performance improvements. The update weighs close to 90MB, which says it all. Since there are no new features this update brings, some Nokia 8 users might choose to ignore it. Make no such mistake because of all the software updates that devices receive, security updates are the most important since they bring patches to any new vulnerabilities as well as enhance the overall security of the handset.

This is an OTA update, which means it’ll take time before all markets get it. Rather than wait, keep on checking the Settings menu and you might just be the lucky one who gets to install the update ahead of the rest.
