This decision seems to be a result of the company suffering massive losses in the VR industry recently!
In recent years, Meta has been at the forefront when it comes to putting together innovative or futuristic technologies. A couple of years back, when the company confirmed that it will make an attempt to put together a VR remake of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, it created a lot of excitement around. Now, there is some bad news for those who had been eagerly waiting for its arrival. Meta has just confirmed that the GTA San Andreas VR has been put on hold indefinitely.

While responding to the queries of a publication via e-mail, a Meta spokesperson stated that the game has been put on hold indefinitely. Recently, a lot of users posted comments on the trailer for Behemoth, which is the upcoming Meta Quest game. The game, which has been developed by Skydance Games, has been in the news for a while now. In the comment section, the official YouTube account of Meta Quest VR confirmed this news. The account further stated, “We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future”.
A formal announcement about GTA San Andreas VR was made during Facebook Connect which was organized in October 2021. During the event, however, no information about the release window was shared. No gameplay footage was shared either. Meta had put up a blog post which spoke about the games that were showcased at this event. In the blog, GTA San Andreas VR was described as a “project many years in the making”.
It must be mentioned here that Meta, in the past, had worked on the VR remake of another game. The America-based technology company had earlier collaborated with Capcom and Armature Studio to make the original Resident Evil 4 a part of the Meta Quest headsets. In the year 2017, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files was launched for the HTC Vive. Soon enough, it found a place for itself on the Oculus Rift headsets and PSVR.

It has been two decades since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was launched for PlayStation 2. The game, which was set in the early ‘90s, gave players the chance to explore San Andreas, a fictional city in Southern California. In the game, players were in charge of Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson, a character who comes back to his old neighborhood in order to investigate his mother’s murder.
The primary reason behind Meta deciding to delay GTA San Andreas VR indefinitely could be the company losing a large amount of money in the VR gaming market. As per a report, the VR division of the company suffered a loss amounting to $16 billion in 2023.
