iPhone SE 4 and Future Apple iPhones to Mostly Use In-House 5G Modems

iPhone SE 4

There have been talks for quite some time now about Apple producing in-house 5G modems for its handsets as part of focusing on reducing its reliability on Qualcomm.

It is likely that the tech giant likely acquired the 5G modem division from Intel in this regard. Apple’s efforts seem to be bearing fruit finally. Renowned tech analyst Min-Chi Kuo, credited for his accurate insights about the supply chain, has posted on the popular X platform sharing some interesting insights about the number of iPhones, including the iPhone SE 4, that Apple plans to ship with its own 5G modem over the next couple of years referencing his supply chain sources.

Shipment Counts

According to the post, Apple is slated to ship around 35 to 40 million iPhones fitted with its in-house 5G modem in the coming year in 2025. This will be followed by 90 to 110 million handsets in 2026. The following year 2027 will see a further increase in count of 160 to 180 million. Kuo goes on to add that this development by Apple could have a negative impact on the shipment and licensing revenue of Qualcomm’s 5G chips.

iPhone SE 4: First iPhone with In-House 5G Modem

It may be noted that Ming-Chi Kuo had mentioned way back in July that the manufacturer’s in-house 5G modem will debut in two iPhones in 2025. One of them is the iPhone SE 4, which is anticipated to have a first-quarter launch. This will be followed by the very slim iPhone 17 Air that might arrive in the third quarter.

Rumors are going around that Apple is contemplating combining its modem, as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips as a single component. If this happens, the overall efficiency of the iPhone and battery life could improve to a great extent.

Qualcomm has a valid licensing agreement with Apple until March 2027. If the above predictions from Kuo turn out to be true as they usually do, Qualcomm is bound to have a steady decline in Apple-associated sales as the manufacturer gears up the development of its modem. Even though there could be potential challenges, Apple seems to be making quick progress with the modem.
