As an attempt to strengthen its presence in the phablet arena, the Indian smartphone manufacturer has launched a new mid-range phablet, the Canvas Mega 2, in the mid-range category.
Launched in early May 2016, this device does not possess very exciting specs, and is available only in black. However, it comes with a very attractive price tag that makes it affordable by one and all alike. The dual micro-SIM (both GSM) Micromax Canvas Mega 2 also has the basic features that you would expect a phablet to have, and is undoubtedly a reasonably good choice for beginners who desire to own a big screen display handset.
At the time of the launch, the company’s chief marketing officer Shubhajit Sen stated that the aim of the gadget was to increase the Indian market revenue in the phablet category, as well as to address consumer grievances in terms of better productivity and viewing experiences at affordable prices.
Dimensions, Weight and Body
There are no clear reports as what the size and weight of the Micromax phablet are. Like the dimensions aspect, it is not known how much the Mega 2 with candy bar form factor will weigh. But, an insight into the leaked images indicates that the device is probably not to be very bulky. The gadget appears to be very slim and easy to keep either in your hand or pocket. Also, given that the price is really on the lower side, the Micromax Canvas Mega 2 is likely to house the normal plastic body with a patterned rear panel.
Screen Display and Pixel Resolution & Density
The Canvas Mega 2 has a really large screen size of 6 inches with a QHD IPS LCD display. Given the size of the screen, the pixel resolution and pixel density are just average with values of 960 x 540 and 184ppi. Apart from the QHD advantage, the IPS LCD display assures you of really wide viewing angles apart from excellent contrasts and rich colors. It goes without mentioning that the big screen renders memorable browsing, reading and gaming moments. On the whole, the phablet assures its users of better viewing experiences in all ways.
Like almost all other smartphones and phablets, the screen of this handset also includes an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor, and an accelerometer.
Rear and Front Cameras
For devices in the mid-range category, the Mega 2 has pretty decent primary rear 8MP and secondary front 5MP cameras. The rear shooter incorporates LED flash and also supports autofocus functionality, while producing decent photographs and recording 720p videos. Selfies and video chats also depict good clarity with the front snapper.
Hardware and Software Configuration
The Micromax Canvas Mega 2 has much the same configuration as other handsets in its category. The phablet has a quad core SC9832 processor that is capable of clocking at 1.3GHz. In terms of memory, the device is packed with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM for its inbuilt storage. This available 8GB can be incremented by a further 32GB using a MicroSD memory card as an external source.
Even as Android’s Marshmallow is the latest operating system offering from Android, the manufacturer has shown preference to getting the gadget installed with the previous Lollipop version installed. This may turn out to be a disappointment to Micromax lovers as the company has released a less expensive smartphone with the current Marshmallow installed. It is yet to be known whether the Canvas Mega 2 will support an upgrade.
Battery and Battery Life
The Mega 2 houses a really large and powerful 3,000 mAh Li-Po battery. This ensures that you can have a whole day of uninterrupted gaming experience with your phablet. Also with full juice, the device provides you with close to 25 hours of continuous talk time and 245 hours of standby time.Another noteworthy point to be noted is that the battery is removable unlike many present day handsets.
With the Micromax phablet, you can avail quite a few connectivity options. These options include 4G LTE, micro USB, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, GPRS/EDGE and Wi-Fi.Otherthan these connectivity modes, the handset also integrates the standard 3.5mm audio jack and FM radio. Thanks to the 4G LTE support, it is just a cakewalk if you want to streamline and upload videos to your social media account.
