Moto Z Play Gets Wi-Fi Certification ahead of Android 7.0 Nougat Update

Moto Z Play

As you probably know by now, the Moto Z Play is the midrange offering in the new Moto Z series by renowned smartphone maker Motorola.

The fact that the phone has been classified as a midrange does make it slightly less popular, but many who already own it will love the idea of having an affordable phone that is compatible with all the amazing Moto Mods used on the flagship Moto Z and Moto Z Force. In fact, you will be forgiven for mistaking the Moto Z Play for a Moto Z for the two have just about the same design and looks, something that makes the midranger one of the best in the market.

Like the rest of the Moto Z series, the Moto Z Play comes with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box, but this is an almost stock version of the 2015 OS. However, it is only this midrange model that had yet to start receiving the new Android 7.0 Nougat as the Moto Z and Moto Z Force had already been joined by the Moto G4 and G4 Plus in receiving this 2016 OS.

With the Moto G4 already receiving the new Android 7.0 Nougat OS, many had begun wondering when the same update will start hitting the Moto Z Play. Well, wonder no more as the device should see the OS come its way in the next few days or weeks for that matter. This is true because the phone, with model number XT1635-02, has just passed Wi-Fi Certification tests at the Wi-Fi Alliance with Android 7.0 Nougat on board. The updated Moto Z Play will be able to support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies.

Motorola was ranked first with respect to rolling out Android Marshmallow updates to its eligible devices and it seems this will also be the case this year. Just recently, a Moto X Play running on Android 7.0 Nougat was spotted on benchmarking website GFXBench, prompting suggestions that the device will be receiving the OS in the near future. Now that the Moto Z Play has also passed Wi-Fi Certification, it seems the Nougat update will be headed to both Play models from 2015 and 2016 very soon.

To keep you refreshed, the Moto Z Play ships with a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED screen alongside a midrange Snapdragon 625 SoC that is paired with a RAM of 3GB and 32GB of expandable storage.
