The automaker released the MX-5 Miata just a year ago and is still busy rolling out the model in different regions.

But, rumors are already up with regards to the next generation model which is touted to weigh much lesser than the current version.

Nobuhiro Yamamoto, program manager of the Mazda MX-5 Miata had a detailed conversation with an automobile magazine. During the interview, the manager confirmed that the next generation car in the series will have very limited changes in terms of design and size. It is going to look a lot like the existing Miata. However, the car is going to weigh quite less. It is made possible by expensive lightweight materials that Mazda has adopted. By losing weight, the engineers have managed to make the car get reliable aerodynamics coupled with great fuel efficiency and a significant boost in speed.

“When we started discussing ideas for the model, we were sure that the size of the MX-5 Miata was just right. There was no need to change it because it provides ample space for passengers and to mount the powertrain. However, the entire designing team was clear about the fact that we need to come up with lightweight materials so as to make it future proof. Carbon fiber is an expensive material at the moment. We are developing new fiber components which will reduce its cost in the future allowing us to make all future Mazda models lightweight and affordable,” confirmed Yamamoto.

It’s not just the components that matter but the powertrain as well.  He added that they have planned to go with smaller tires and low-powered engines so as to keep the vehicle lightweight in all respect. The next gen Mazda MX-5 Miata is supposed to be a simple car which doesn’t require too much pulling capacity. A possible option is the 1.5-liter I-4 engine which will be capable of delivering up to 129 horsepower combined with 111 lb feet of torque. Another model will use a 2.0-liter I-4 engine delivering up to 155 horsepower and 111 lb feet of torque. Yamamoto confirmed that Speedster and Spyder are not going into production anytime soon.

The existing version of the Miata is already considered the fastest cars in the series. Mazda is planning to offer great fuel efficiency so as to make it appealing to buyers who look for an everyday car which balances the best of performance and cost efficiency.
