The SNES Mouse, which was originally launched in the year 1992, was a two-button mouse that would come equipped with a gray plastic mouse pad and the game Mario Paint. The colors of the SNES Mouse matched the SNES perfectly. It was light gray in color and featured two purple buttons and a black connecting cable.
The SNES Mouse utilized the first controller slot of the SNES console for a plethora of games. Since the SNES Mouse opted for the SNES proprietary connector, it remained incompatible with PCs. The SNES Mouse was sold as an independent item at a valuation which was under $30. Over the years, several third-party companies have manufactured the SNES Mouse in different avatars. Hyperkin’s Hyper Click Retro-Style Mouse was one of the popular replicas that came to the fore.
Though one has only heard rumors till now, there is a good possibility of the SNES Mouse making a comeback. A dataminer, who identifies themselves as LuigiBlood, recently put up a post on Tumblr and stated that Nintendo reworked the functionality of the SNES Mouse in a secretive manner. It was an integral part of the experience that was provided at the launch of the SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online.
According to LuigiBlood, these changes were made via the September 17 SNES app update. The update, as fans are now aware, also included games like Battletoads/Double Dragon. The SNES Mouse emulation was retooled to read either controller port.

The majority of SNES titles, that offered SNES Mouse compatibility, were accessible only in Japan. Through the SNES app, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in the West got to experience many of these titles. SNES has retained its position as one of the most popular consoles by Nintendo. As and when new titles are added to the Switch Online, fans are expected to respond to it positively.
