No Google Assistant on Android 7.1 Nougat for Non-Google Pixel Phones

When Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones were unveiled, one of the major highlights of the devices was the baked Google Assistant alongside the latest version of Android 7.1 Nougat.

There had been prior reports suggesting that this Android 7.1 Nougat version will remain exclusive to the Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones. However, this is highly unlikely as the likes of Google Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X as well as Nexus 9, among others non-Google devices are also expected to be updated to the latest version available.

Even though the update to Android 7.1 Nougat is expected to come along with this Google Assistant feature, this feature will reportedly not be making it to non-Google Pixel phones anytime soon. According to an Android 7.1 Nougat changelog, there are a number of features that will remain exclusive to the Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones. There are also some that have not yet made it to the platform but will be coming soon through updates. As it turns out, the Google Assistant will remain exclusive to the Pixel phones, at least for now.

In case you didn’t know, Google Assistant is simply an enhanced version of Google Now. However, it has been baked right into the Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones, meaning that you can summon it and use it from any page or window on the phone. As far as non-Pixel phones are concerned, this Assistant can only be brought to life when using Google Allo, among other Google-owned products. With time, it is expected that this Assistant will make it to third-party players such as Uber, among others.

Google Pixel vs Samsung Galaxy S7

There is no doubt that this is an enticing exclusive feature for Google Pixel and Pixel XL users, however,  it is such a pity that non-Google phones will have to wait longer before taking advantage of this AI helper. Still, Google has promised to make the update available in future, with other features such as Daydream VR mode, Night Light blue light filter as well as more uses for the fingerprint scanner.

The developer preview of Android 7.1 Nougat will be released this month, but there is no specific date yet.
