Modularity is fast becoming the new trend when it comes to the smartphone industry.
As of now, only a handful of phones may offer this feature but it will not be surprising to see it become a mainstream aspect in the next few years. Then, phones like the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force will be remembered as the trendsetters. Launched by Lenovo a few days ago, the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force will be the new power devices within the Motorola brand lineup.
They may seem to come with the usual kind of specifications like a 5.5 inch display with QHD resolution and snapdragon processor. However, the real talking point within these phones is the support for modularity. LG started with the trend with its LG G5 modules, which were called as friends. However, they did not seem like a practical solution but Lenovo seem to have hit the jackpot with the technology for the same on the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force.
At the back of these two devices, 16 pin connectors are provided. These magnetic connectors are used to accept modules and improve the phone in any given aspect. The availability of numerous options like adding a projector module or speaker module has opened the door of possibilities. However, Motorola unveiled the details about these modules without giving out any information about prices, which have come out only now.
The Insta-Share projector module is the priciest at $299. However, it has the ability to transform the smartphone like no other. The module comes with its own battery which can last for an hour. It will be capable of projecting a 70-inch screen although at 480p resolution. It is highly unlikely that this module will see much takers since it is pricier than many smartphones. However, it is highly possible that Mods like the JBL SoundBoost and power pack would be popular. Both are retailing at just under $79 and seem to offer great value for money.
The JBL speakers also come in with a kickstand so as to avoid holding the device while watching movies. The power pack, meanwhile, will have the option to support wireless charging but those models will cost $100 and not $79 as the base variants. The Kate Spade StyleShell Mod, which is purely for design purposes, is available for $79 as well. The availability of these mods are not known yet.
