During the Capcom Next Summer 2024 Stream, it was confirmed that Resident Evil 9, which happens to be the next game in the franchise, is in the development process. While fans do not have a clear idea about what Resident Evil 9 would offer, they are well aware of the fact that this is a game that a lot can be done with. Apart from its narrative, Capcom can experiment a lot with its mechanics as well.

While Capcom has the scope to go wild with its imagination, the gaming studio has to be mindful of a few things while putting this game together. The survival horror franchise is characterized by certain elements or tropes and one expects Resident Evil 9 to follow a path that would be similar to the kind older games in the franchise have taken. However, while staying true to the spirit of the franchise, Capcom can experiment with several things and bring in elements that could leave the fans surprised in a good way.
A lot has been discussed about Ethan Winters, who happens to be the protagonist that was brought to the fore in Resident Evil 7. One also saw the character in Resident Evil Village. Though the character has his share of fans, he was often projected as somebody who was a few notches below legacy characters like Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy. By the time Resident Evil Village concluded, Ethan was out of the game. Now, there is a possibility of Capcom being dependent on older characters to take the narrative forward in Resident Evil 9.
Right now, it is quite evident that after Resident Evil Village and its DLC, the Winters saga has now come to a conclusion. While Ethan did add some value to the game, one cannot deny the fact that he was much less trained and skilled than other popular characters. Despite all the positive attributes he had, he never really emerged as one of the most popular or likable characters.
Ethan was introduced to the world of Resident Evil in a very smooth manner. He had embarked on a journey to protect his wife. That led him to discover the Bakers household and all the dread it offered.
There have been reports about Resident Evil 9 being designed as an open-world game. If this is indeed true, players would get the chance to explore the strengths of some of the most respected heroes in the game. Even if the game offers players a completely new world to explore, they can expect to come across some familiar elements.
