Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini might be on the way, the latest rumors can reveal. While the Korean company is famous for coming in with “Mini” or rather compact versions of the flagships models, this trend was skipped last year with the Galaxy S6 variants.
Rather than come in with a Galaxy S6 Mini, the tech giant resolved to unleash a much bigger device in the shape of Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. On previous occasions, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S5 flagship and followed it with a Galaxy S5 Mini while the Galaxy S4 Mini was released the same year as the Galaxy S4 flagship.
When the company skipped the Mini versions completely, other models started coming in, for instance, Samsung Galaxy A and Galaxy J series, all of which have been doing great in their target markets. There was even word that Samsung has declared it won’t be releasing the Mini versions of its flagships anymore. However, it seems the company is considering backtracking this decision, just like it did with some features of the Galaxy S5 when unveiling the latest Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini to compete with iPhone SE
Samsung has been seeing a lot of competition from Apple with respect to the flagship end. In fact, the Korean tech giant is trailing Apple when it comes to flagship sales in the U.S. This trend has started taking shape in other countries such as China, something that Cupertino wants to expand to other regions of the world with the upcoming pocket-friendly iPhone SE.
The 4-inch iPhone SE is expected to be released on March 21, but this has not been confirmed by Apple so far. Nonetheless, the fact that Apple is releasing a phone targeting the mid-range market might be troubling to Samsung. If reports are accurate, the new iPhone SE will come with similar features under the hood as what the iPhone 6 comes with. This means this phone will be equally powerful as the 2014 flagship, but just smaller in size and more affordable.
With this in mind, word on the street has it that Samsung also wants to get a Galaxy S7 Mini ready in time to compete with this device before the release of the iPhone 7 later in September. The rumored Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini will have a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution, just like the Galaxy S5. Further reports claim that the phone will carry the same chipsets installed in this year’s Galaxy S7 – Snapdragon 820 for U.S. variants and Exynos 8890 for other regions and a RAM of 3GB.
It is important that you take this rumor with a grain of salt given that Samsung never goes for the same internals available on its flagship models when coming in with Mini versions. All other previously released Samsung Galaxy Mini models have had lower specs, however, given the stiff competition already available in this market such as OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Huawei; Samsung might just be convinced that this is the way.
Other rumored features of the Galaxy S7 Mini include a 12MP rear camera, thickness of 9.9 mm, IP68 water and dust resistance rating as well as a microSD card slot.
