Samsung Galaxy S8 Adds Facial Recognition to Iris Recognition, Beating Apple to the Punch

In addition to Iris Recognition, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will also offer facial recognition features.

The reports came in from The Korea Economic Daily. Earlier there were reports quoting Samsung officials that face recognition had been implemented in the Galaxy S8 devices, as the iris recognition feature had some limitations, regarding the speed and the accuracy.

Facial Recognition

The new facial recognition feature on the Galaxy S8 will enable the user to unlock the smartphone in a mere 10 milliseconds span of time or in other words, in 0.01 seconds, according to the report in the above mentioned Daily. According to another source in the industry, Samsung has finished developing all the technology for facial recognition with respect to the Galaxy S8, so the feature is all ready to be launched with the device.

Like Windows Hello

The scope of the facial recognition feature is also limited in some ways, but it will offer a functionality that is almost the same as the Windows Hello. Earlier, the Windows Hello biometric verification system was criticized, as it would not work well with a third party device. However, Microsoft has since then proved that the solution could work effectively if optimized correctly. This has been proved with the Surface Pro 4 and other Microsoft laptops as well as hybrid desktops.

Unlocking in 10 Milliseconds

However, the claim by Samsung that the facial recognition will allow users to unlock the smartphone within 10 milliseconds could be difficult to prove in daily use. The real reason for Samsung implementing the facial recognition feature is that iris scanning is not very reliable, at least in terms of the speed of unlocking.

The Timing

The most interesting aspect of this news is that the facial recognition will be arriving at a time when Samsung’s competitor, Apple is also planning on eliminating the fingerprint scanner and using a face scanner in case of the upcoming iPhone 8. Samsung might just beat Apple in the race by revealing the new technology a few months earlier, as the unveiling of the Galaxy S8 flagship device is expected on the 29th of this month.

Hallmark of Flagship Device

If the news is true and Samsung is really bringing in the facial recognition feature for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, it is truly a hallmark feature for flagship devices. This is because the fingerprint scanner has become more common now, with some middle range phones and even some entry-level phones offering the fingerprint scanner feature.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 will come with a display screen of 5.8 inches, whereas the Galaxy S8 Plus will have a bigger display screen of 6.2 inches. However, the actual display size could be smaller, as the round corners of the display have to be accounted for. The basic variants of both the smartphones will come with a 64 GB internal storage, according to reports. Samsung has confirmed that the new Galaxy S8 phones will be revealed on the 29th of March.
