Last week, Sony confirmed that it will be attending the MWC 2017 in Barcelona, Spain, but the press invitations did not give out any details as to what will be on display.
At last year’s MWC, Sony unveiled the new Xperia X series and if things go right, we could see this series refreshed with 2017 models at the upcoming event. Back then, the company unveiled the Xperia X, Xperia XA, and Xperia X Performance. Where the latter was the flagship offering, the other two filled the midrange market.
According to reports, Sony has plans to refresh the midrangers with MediaTek-powered processors as opposed to last year’s mixture of Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek Helio chipsets. The Xperia X was powered by a Snapdragon 650 while the Xperia XA came in with a MediaTek Helio P10 chipset. However, last week, it emerged that Sony will release at least two phones (G31XX and G32XX) that have the same MediaTek Helio P20 processor on board. A few days later, one of the Helio P20-powered Sony Xperia phones with model number G3221 appeared on AnTuTu benchmarking website, giving out a good number of specs and features, among them Android 7.0 Nougat OS, 1080p resolution, 23MP main camera, 16MP selfie camera, 4GB RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. Apparently, this could be the Xperia X 2017.
Now, in a newly leaked video, it appears that the Sony Xperia XA 2017 has just been revealed to the world. If this is true, we are talking about the Helio P20 variant that has model number G3121. While this video doesn’t give out the specs of the phone, it shows off what we can expect in terms of design. The images show a phone that is very close to the Xperia XA 2016, but there is a new USB-C port instead of microUSB.
Sony, like Samsung, LG, and Xiaomi for that matter, is putting an emphasis on thinner bezels on the sides. However, the top and bottom bezels are quite big. There is no fingerprint scanner and the rear camera has a single-LED flash. Like the Xperia XA 2017, the leaked G3121 has a 720p resolution screen with a 2.5D curved glass on top and for the design material, it appears that Sony will go for a matte plastic finish. In short, these specs confirm that this is indeed a midrange phone.
Android 7.0 Nougat will power the Xperia XA 2017 out of the box, with the current firmware version for the prototype being v40.0.A.0.137. If the title of the leaked video is anything to go by, the Sony Xperia G3121 will share a major feature with the G3221 – a 23MP rear snapper. As for the rest of the specs, we should be able to find out very soon.
