Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Note Edge and Galaxy S5 are getting January’s Android Security Update

Android 7.0 Nougat

Just this week, Sprint pushed out January’s Android Security Patch for Samsung Galaxy S5. The same is now happening with those using the same phone on Verizon Wireless, but there is more.

According to the Bid Red, those using Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge are also part of this update. The carrier is currently rolling out this update to the three 2014 phones, something that many should appreciate given that the phones, especially the Galaxy S5, are being caught up by age. Usually, Android OEMs roll out software updates to devices that are less than two years, but since this is one is just a minor security update, devices that are less than three years can still be part of the updates.

Yesterday, Sprint began rolling out the same update to Samsung Galaxy S5, but Verizon had added two more devices to the updates, including the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge. As you may know from receiving previous monthly security updates, the latest version for the months of January isn’t heavy. It weighs about 30MB and as such, don’t expect any new features after the update.

Still, the changelog notes that the update comes with bug fixes for up to 67 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE). This is not all, as the update also comes with up to 28 security patches exclusive to Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note Edge. Given what this small-looking update comes with, it is important that you download and install it once the OTA notification appears on your phone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 users can expect to receive software update version MMB29M.N910VVRS2CQA1 while those on Galaxy S5 will be updated to version MMB29M.G900VVRS2DQA1. As for the Note Edge, you get version MMB29M.N915VVRS2CQA1. Since the updates are coming in over the air, not all devices will receive the notification at once. But everyone should be able to be notified by the end of this week.
