Xiaomi, dubbed “the Apple of China”, is reportedly working on releasing a compact version of the flagship it recently showcased at the MWC 2016 event in Barcelona.
Reportedly known as the Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini, this device might deal a huge blow to Apple’s plans of using the iPhone SE to reach out to developing markets. Given that Apple had released its cheapest ever smartphone that has reportedly seen more than 3.4 million units preordered in China alone, the news of a Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini will not be the best for the company.
Of course, there will always be the Android vs. iOS debate, but there is no arguing that Xiaomi has class, which is basically what has been underlining Apple’s iPhone.
A new era coming in
Two years had gone without Apple releasing a 4-inch smartphone. Samsung seems to have dropped the idea of having Mini versions as well, but there is also a rumor that this year might see the return of the Galaxy Mini series, with the possibility of a Samsung Galaxy S7 Mini being released being high.
Nonetheless, this trend was seemingly over as more and more OEMs flock towards the large-screened devices while ditching the smaller devices. With the release of the iPhone SE, it seems Apple has just revived this Mini trend.
Possible Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini spec sheet
Word has it that the Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini will come with a 4.3-inch display screen, which is just 0.3 inches more than the iPhone SE. The screen will feature a 1280 by 720 pixels resolution, which is very decent for such a small device.
Interestingly, the Mini version of Xiaomi Mi 5 will pack the same hardware under the hood as its flagship counterpart. The phone is expected to pack the latest Snapdragon 820 chipset, a RAM of 3GB and onboard storage of 32GB. The rear is said to come with a snapper of 13MP, which should give you decent photos. As usual, the device is expected to be very affordable. With the standard version of the Xiaomi Mi 5 going for about $305, the Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini might exchange hands at about $276.
Just for comparison purposes, Apple’s iPhone SE has a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 1136 by 640 pixels. Under the hood the phone packs an A9 chipset, RAM of 2GB and has onboard storage of 16GB. On the rear is a 12MP iSight camera and the phone has a price tag of $399.
On paper, the rumored Xiaomi Mi 5 Mini is a lot bigger than what Apple offers in iPhone SE. However, there is really nothing that can be guaranteed at this time, because this is still a rumor. Xiaomi already competes at the top with the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6S, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the company compete for the same space as far as the pint-sized smartphones are concerned.
