It’s been a while since Xiaomi Mi 5 entered the Android 7.0 Nougat beta channel, but finally, the handset has left the channel in favor of the stable version.
If you own a Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship, you have something to smile about as the new Android 7.0 Nougat OTA has just started hitting the device. However, this is currently limited to the Chinese market, but it won’t be long before other regions with the device start getting the same treat.
Xiaomi Mi 5 was unveiled in 2016 alongside the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, Xperia X Performance and LG G5 at the MWC event in Spain. However, the phone is only dominant in Asian markets for reasons well known to many fans out there. Like other 2016 flagships, the phone packs high-end specs that include a Snapdragon 820, 3GB/4GB RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage. You also get a decent camera, a fingerprint scanner, fast charging and lots of other features that are usually spared for the high-end family, however, the price tag makes it feel like a midranger.
If anything, this is what has made Xiaomi such a popular OEM – the ability to combine flagship specs with affordable pricing, but like many other Chinese companies, Xiaomi has never been the best when it comes to software updates. Perhaps this could be one major drawback for the company, but now the 2016 flagship has started receiving Android 7.0 Nougat OTA at about the same time when the likes of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are also receiving the update, it shows how committed the company is towards making amends.
Alongside the Nougat treat is the MIUI 8.2 skin that runs on top of the stock Android OS. This ROM brings a number of bug fixes, performance enhancements as well as new features, among them a new Home screen shortcut in the Settings menu, among others.
The new update is quite heavy and weighs about 1.3GB and if you are smart enough, you should download it via Wi-Fi.
