Xiaomi Mi 6 Launched – Powerful Specs to Match (or Better) the high-end Galaxy S8+, but Priced at Just $363

Xiaomi Mi 6

Xiaomi never ceases to amaze and this time it’s about the latest Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship. The Chinese tech giant has just taken the wraps off the Mi 6 in China and this means that we have all the details regarding the specs, features, prices and release date.

As usual with Xiaomi devices, the Mi 6 packs high-end specs but is valued at a very affordable price. Last year’s Mi 5 had the same specs as the Galaxy S7, but it came in at half the price of the latter. The story is not different with this year’s Xiaomi Mi 6 as far as the Galaxy S8 is concerned.

Although not as futuristic as the Galaxy S8 in terms of design, the Xiaomi Mi 6 rocks on its own terms. The phone packs a stunning four-sided 3D curved glass design that is splash resistant and keeps significant bezels at the top and bottom. The latter bezel plays home to an under-glass fingerprint scanner, but this shouldn’t be mistaken for a fingerprint scanner embedded under the main display screen. Speaking of the display screen, as usual, the Mi 6 gets a 5.15-inch panel with eye care to reduce harmful blue rays while at the same time retaining true colors.

At the center of action is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor that is paired with an Adreno 540 GPU and a RAM of 6GB. This is huge for the Xiaomi Mi 6, considering that last year’s Mi 5 had an entry-level variant of 3GB RAM. In terms of storage, it gets even better as the base model matches the Galaxy S8 and S8+ with 64GB of expandable storage. If this is too small for you, the Mi 6 is also available in a 128GB package.

The back of the Xiaomi Mi 6 has a dual-lens camera with two 12MP lenses. Xiaomi notes that where one lens is meant for wide-angle views, the second lens is a telephoto sensor that lets you achieve up to 2x lossless zoom. You also get all the latest bells and whistles as far as smartphone cameras are concerned, including 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS).

To keep the Xiaomi Mi 6 going is a massive 3350mAh battery unit, bigger than the 3000mAh unit found on the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and almost similar to the unit used on the 5.7-inch LG G6. Of course, support for fast charging is included via a USB-C port. Android Nougat powers the Mi 6 out of the box with the company’s MIUI skin on top.

Now, for the most interesting part, the base model of the Xiaomi Mi 6, which carries a massive 6GB RAM and 64GB storage is priced at RMB 2499, which is about $363. The 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant, which matches the high-end Galaxy S8+ in terms of performance specs, is priced at RMB 2899 or just $421. However, this variant has a glass back. If you want the ceramic back variant with the same specs, you’ll have to shell out RMB 2999, which is about $436.

When compared to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the Mi 6 is just flying high in terms of price and specs combination. The standard S8 is valued at about $750 while the S8+ has a price tag of about $850. If you want to get your hands on the high-end S8+ that ships with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, you better be ready with close to $1000 or even more.

Xiaomi Mi 6 will be available in China as from tomorrow, but there’s still no word on the international availability. Of course, we’ll be here to update you on when this amazing flagship killer will be available in your local market, if at all it happens.
