A new generation of Mazda 6 models are heading to the dealership stores. This time, they are going to be much more powerful made possible by the brand new 2.5-liter turbo four engine.
The powertrain variant is already being used by the company in their CX-9 series cars. The crew has decided to implement the same so as to add some variation to the lineup. Besides, it is good news for people who always wanted to go for a Mazda 6 but changed their opinion because it didn’t deliver the performance they expected.
Dave Coleman, head of the vehicle’s development engineering team revealed the information to a leading automobile magazine. He confirmed that the next generation engine is designed in such a way that it can easily fit into all models in the lineup including the Mazda3, Mazda6 and the CX-5 variants.
In the earlier models, the extra space was occupied by the intake manifold which has now been fixed and redesigned in such a way that the body makes it easier to use the turbo four engine in it. With the new modification, the same powertrain may also be implemented in the Mazda3’s future models.
The CX-9 powered by the 2.5-liter turbo four powertrain is capable of producing a total of 227 horsepower. When premium petrol is used, it gets a significant boost up to 250 horsepower. The car delivers 310 lb feet of torque and has 2,000 rpm. It uses a six speed automatic transmission which is the only gearbox available for the particular model.
Speaking about implementing new powertrains in existing cars, Coleman commented that the final decision is always left to the product planners because they know much better about the market than the designing crew does. No prototype components have been used in order to mount the turbo four engine in these cars because it was a right fit. If it works out well, the product planner has the rights to make the final decision, added Coleman.
The biggest challenge that lies in front of the people is not using the powertrain in a Mazda 6 but to use it with a small crossover, like the Mazda 3. When they tried to do so, the belts of the engine were running on the frame rails which isn’t the right way to ship a car with. Let’s just hope they find a way to bring it to the small car soon.
