Ever since the release of Windows 10 Mobile, things haven’t been easy for Microsoft as far as the handset world is concerned.
Not so many Microsoft-owned smartphones are currently in the market boasting the new mobile OS, something that has fueled speculations that the Windows OS maker might be lining up a surprise Surface Phone. If you are an avid follower of Microsoft, you should already know the Surface tablet lineup the company offers, however, if indeed the Surface Phone materializes, it will be the first of its kind.
To make sure that the phone stays as unique as possible, latest rumors claim that Microsoft will pack a humongous onboard storage chip that has never been seen on a phone before. We are talking of a Surface Phone with an internal storage of 500GB. This is huge and new to the smartphone world, but who knows what Microsoft might be directing the phone to?
The Lumia lineup seems to be dead for now, something that even adds to these speculations that a Surface Phone will soon hit the stores. Apparently, Chinese microblogging site reveals that the new phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 830 SoC, which is the next-gen chipset to follow the Snapdragon 820.
If these rumors are to be believed, the phone will come in three variants. The base model will pack a RAM of 3GB and carry internal storage of 32GB. There will be a second variant that will pack 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The rumor goes on to state that the third variant will carry 8GB of RAM and a massive storage of 500GB. While we have seen handsets with 128GB of onboard storage before, this massive size has never happened before. In fact, apart from the rumored 256GB on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 6, it has never happened before.
While the 8GB RAM aspect remains possible, having 500GB of onboard storage is somehow unlikely. But still, anything is possible. The phone will reportedly be made of metal with touches that resemble the Lumia lineup. As for the camera, expect to see a 20MP Carl Zeiss snapper on the rear of the Microsoft Surface Phone.
Microsoft Surface Phone release date and price
As it seems, Microsoft will release the new Surface Phone in early 2017, with the price thought to be somewhere in the regions of $900.
