OnePlus has already rolled out Android 7.0 Nougat to the 2016 OnePlus 3 and 3T flagships, but Android 7.1.1 Nougat is still in the works.
There is still no mention of the official date as to when the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat OTA will start rolling out to the OnePlus 3 and 3T handsets. The story is also the same when it comes to the 2015 OnePlus 2, which is still running on the year-old Android Marshmallow OS.
The Chinese OEM has not mentioned any dates as far as Android 7.0 Nougat update on OnePlus 2 is concerned. But there seems to be some really encouraging news coming from benchmarking website Geekbench. According to the website’s listings, there is a OnePlus 2 handset that has appeared there and it’s running on the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS.
This is an interesting development given that the OS has not yet even reached the newer OnePlus 3 and 3T. In addition, the fact that the initial release of v7.0 has not been rolled out to the device adds further doubt, but this is not a major one since we’ve seen such cases happen before.
From what we’ve gathered from Geekbench, it appears that the performance of the OnePlus 2 dips following the update from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. When the former OS is running the show, the device manages a single-core score of 1164 and a multi-core score of 3639. However, when Android 7.1.1 Nougat steps in, the single-core score drops to 619 while the multi-core score comes to 2515.
The OnePlus 2 unit in the two Geekbench benchmarks has the same hardware specs, but the only difference is the software running the show. If the tests are anything to go by, an upgrade to the new Android Nougat doesn’t seem like the ideal choice here. However, it is still early and these are similarly early benchmarks. OnePlus should be working on the OS as at the time of this writing and who knows, we might see even much better stats when everything is finally stabilized in the not-so-distant future.
Nonetheless, the fact that a OnePlus 2 handset has appeared with Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board should mean the OTA update is not so far away.
