Oppo ‘5X’ is Coming at the Mobile World Congress 2017, Company Confirms

Apple iPhone 6s vs Oppo R9

Oppo is without a doubt one of the hottest smartphone manufacturers in the world right now. In fact, the company toppled Apple as far as 2016 smartphone sales in China are concerned, with Cupertino managing to sell only 12 million units of the iPhone 6S as compared to Oppo’s 17 million for the Oppo R9.

In a new development, the Chinese company, which also owns OnePlus, has confirmed that it will be at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. In the invite image, the company has the tagline “GO 5X FURTHER”, something that suggests a possible Oppo 5X in the making.

Oppo to the China’s official social networking website Weibo to confirm its attendance, but there’s no any truth in the claim that the company will launch a new Oppo 5X – it’s just a hunch from our side of the table. If anything, don’t be surprised if this turns out to be something else other than a phone.

At the moment, the ‘flagship’ smartphone from the Chinese company is the Oppo R9S and has a counterpart in Oppo R9S Plus. If there is no Oppo 5X, the company could be suggesting that its next flagship will be 5x better than the current R9S and R9S Plus. These two, despite being the high-end offerings from the company, have not-so-impressive specs sheets.

Oppo 5X MWC 2017

The Oppo R9S has a 5.5-inch Full HD display screen, which is not bad at all. However, under the hood, you get a Snapdragon 625 SoC that is paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. The best part of the R9S is photography, where you get 16MP snappers on both ends. The phone ships with a 3010mAh battery and Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

As for the Oppo R9S Plus, you get a 6.0-inch screen with the same 1080p resolution, but the chipset under the hood gets a little bit better, coming with a Snapdragon 653 SoC, which is still a midrange processor. The good side of the story is that this chipset is paired with a massive RAM of 6GB and storage of 64GB. Like the R9S, you get 16MP lenses on both cameras and Android Marshmallow out of the box, but the battery is larger at 4000mAh.

From the specs, the Oppo R9S and R9S Plus are meant to compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy A 2017 or Galaxy C Pro series for that matter, but the MWC 2017 could see the company jump in with Snapdragon 820/821-powered phones – hence the “GO 5x FURTHER” tagline. We’ll wait and see what the company has in store on February 27, but for now, take this as mere speculation.
