Samsung has been using flexible OLED display panels on its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series since a couple of years.

Citing industry sources, a South Korean publication has claimed that Samsung Display will be supplying 6.42-inch flexible OLED panels to Oppo for an upcoming smartphone. This handset is also speculated to feature a notch like the Apple iPhone X. Earlier today, Oppo had confirmed that it will be launching Oppo Find X flagship phone on June 19 and rumors surrounding it have claimed that it may sport a 6.42-inch OLED screen. Hence, it is being speculated that the Oppo Find X could be the first smartphone ever to sport a notch enabled edge display.

Oppo will be receiving flexible OLED panels from Samsung by the end of this month. It will be the first time that Samsung Display will be providing flexible OLED panels to the Chinese firm as it had been previously supplying only flat OLED panels to it. The company has been using notched display design on some of its recent smartphones such as Oppo R15, R15 Dream Mirror Edition, F7 and others. Oppo is now rumored to employ both edge and notch design on its upcoming premium phone. “Oppo has a two-track strategy that employs both Edge and Notch designs”, quotes TheBell. The Oppo phone featuring such an advanced display is expected to release in the market by July or August.

Each flexible OLED panel costs around $100 whereas a flat OLED screen with notch is priced only around $20. The prices of flat OLED panels have sharply declined in the recent past because of stiff competition from LCD panels. This has swung in favor of Samsung Display as apart from Samsung Electronics in the domestic market and Apple in the U.S., it is now providing the expensive flexible OLED panels to Oppo which is one of the major smartphone makers in China.
