In the recently concluded year 2016, the Oppo R9s emerged as the best-selling smartphone in China, well ahead of the iPhone 6S.
What this means is that the Oppo R9s is a very popular phone in China, but it has also managed to cross borders into other markets around the Asian continent. The handset is a midranger with really impressive performance and camera specs and given Oppo’s affordable pricing strategy, it was a no-brainer that the R9s beat Apple’s flagship to the top selling phone’s spot.
Like many other Chinese OEMs, Oppo isn’t up there when it comes to rolling out software updates (although things are a little different at OnePlus, which is owned by Oppo). The best-selling Oppo R9s comes pre-installed with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and having been released in October 2016, many expected that the device will be updated to Android 7.0 Nougat at some point this year.
While the dates haven’t been clear, it appears that the Oppo R9s will soon be running on the new Android 7.0 Nougat OS. This conclusion stems from the leaked images of the phone with the Nougat OS running the show. One of the Weibo-sourced images shows off the phone being used in multi-window mode, a feature that is exclusive to Nougat. Only this is enough to tell us that the R9s will soon be updated to the new OS via OTA.
As noted earlier, the Oppo R9s has some really impressive specs. These include a decent Gorilla Glass 5-protected 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage, although this uses SIM 2 slot. The back of the phone comes in with a top class 16MP shooter that boasts a large aperture of f/1.7, similar to the 12MP unit found on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The sensor has PDAF, LED flash, HDR, touch focus and can record up to 4K videos. The front has the same 16MP lens, but the aperture is a little smaller at f/2.0.
The Oppo R9s has a 3010mAh battery that keeps it moving. This battery supports fast charging technology via a microUSB port. You also get a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth v4.0 and 4G LTE connectivity.
