Xiaomi grabbed the smartphone world by the neck back in 2016 when it unveiled the massive 6.4-inch phablet dubbed Xiaomi Mi MIX.
Up to now, no other smartphone OEM has successfully emulated what the Chinese OEM did with the display design of the Mi MIX. The phablet has a triple bezel-less screen that has never been witnessed before. In China, the tech giant has earned the title “the Apple of China” just because of releasing phones that are a lot in common with the iPhone, but only in design.
With the launch of the Xiaomi Mi MIX, it was seen as a breakthrough for the company and the smartphone world in general, which has been dominated by Samsung and Apple for so long. However, Xiaomi has a new competitor in the market and it’s the Elephone S8. Of course, this is another phone from China, a country that has been grabbing the headlines lately as far as smartphone designs are concerned.
We’ve seen the Xiaomi Mi MIX, Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design, ASUS ZenFone AR and now it’s the Elephone S8. Last year, the company unveiled the Elephone S7, a phone that had just about the same looks as Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but the specs under the hood were quite different for the two.
The Elephone S7 had several variants, but the highest offering came in with a 5.5-inch Full HD LCD display screen. Under the hood, there is a MediaTek Helio X20 deca-core processor that is paired with a RAM of 4GB. The storage amount available is 64GB, but it can be expanded via a microSD card. There is a battery unit of 3000mAh, a 13MP primary shooter with f/2.2 aperture, LED flash and AF while the front has a 5MP sensor. Interestingly, this phone is available for just $249.
Now, the newly-listed Elephone S8 is the successor to the Elephone S7. Rather than wait up and see what Samsung has in store with respect to the Galaxy S8, the company has moved onto another mentor and this time it’s the Xiaomi Mi MIX. The upcoming S8 will ship with the bottom bezel only, just like the Mi MIX. However, it will be the first to integrate its front camera and possibly the fingerprint scanner as well on the display, according to the images listed on the official website.
As noted at the beginning, the Xiaomi Mi MIX comes with a huge 6.4-inch display screen, but the Elephone S8 brings this down to 5.5 inches. The latter also ships with a slightly lower resolution of Full HD, but this shouldn’t make any difference to the naked eye. Like its predecessor, the Elephone S8 has a MediaTek Helio processor, but this time it goes for the P10 (MT6755) octa-core. This SoC is paired with a Mali-T860 MP2 GPU, a RAM of 6GB and there is onboard storage of 128GB. This storage can further be expanded via a microSD card of up to 128GB.
In terms of cameras, the Elephone S8 packs a dual-lens setup on the back that houses two 13MP snappers with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone LED flash, laser autofocus, and 1080p video recording capabilities. The front side has an 8MP shooter, which should also deliver impressive selfies. But unlike the Xiaomi Mi MIX which has shifted this selfie camera from the top bezel to the bottom bezel, the Elephone S8 has debuted completely new technology in the smartphone world.
Android 7.0 Nougat will be running the show when the phone is finally released, although the date is not yet known. Like the previous version, the Elephone S8 is very affordable, with the phone already listed on the official website at a price of just $399.90, but pre-orders are not yet live.
