Developed in the mid 1990s, Star Fox 2 was developed as a sequel to the popular Star Fox.
However, this direct sequel was never released then and the project was shelved. This was because developers said that if the 3D game had made its entry then, it would be compared with PlayStation 1 and was very likely to fall below expectations. Yet, Nintendo has not made any official declaration on why the project did not kick off then.
Finally, it is making its appearance on Nintendo some time in the second half of the year. In the past two decades, many untranslated and unfinished versions of Star Fox 2 were leaked with bugs in them. Some of these versions also had their bugs fixed and translations made from the original Japanese language to English. But, none of these games saw the light of the day. Yet, after all these years, the final form of game will be made available by Nintendo on its Super NES Classic Edition microconsole in the end of September. It is still not known what has prompted Nintendo to decide on releasing the game for reasons apart from fan service.
Along with Star Fox 2, the Nintendo console will come preloaded with 20 additional SNES games. The details of these games have not yet been revealed. However, the developers have presented a catch for those who are waiting eagerly to lay their hands on the game. Gamers are expected to compulsorily finish playing the first of many levels of the original Star Fox game. Only once this has been successfully completed, they will be able to access Star Fox 2. However, the good news is that the prequel will be available in the same console that Star Fox 2 will arrive in. So, you will not have the trouble of looking out separately for this game.
The rail shooter game features an attack by an Andross against Corneria. He makes use of new giant missiles and battleships. The game also includes two new team members – a lynx named Miyu and a white dog called Fay. You can choose your role from a set of six characters in the game. The other four characters include Fox McCloud, a fox who is responsible for leading the Star Fox team; Falco Lombardi, a cocky expert pilot; Peppy Hare, a rabbit and Slippy Toad; a frog. Each character has a distinct role to play towards reaching the same goal.
It is worth noting at this point of time that the Super NES Classic Edition microconsole is also a new venture by Nintendo. This console is also slated for a September 2017 release to coincide with the launch of Star Fox 2. Nintendo has made significant changes to its upcoming console when compared to its other counterparts. For instance, the console is significantly smaller in size and can be easily connected to modern high definition TV sets. Also, it does not include feature the original SNES cartridges.
