10 Efficiency Boost Tips for Mac Users

Apple Didn’t Patch it if They Found the MacOS High Sierra

There are multiple reasons why a lot of people choose to invest in Mac computers. Some prefer them because they are fans of Apple’s products.

Also, many people appreciate the great performance and speed Macs can provide. Although, Macs can get old as well and lose their speed and efficiency.

Luckily, there are quite a few ways to prevent and fix the issue of decreased efficiency. Thus today, we will share ten efficiency boost tips for Mac users.

Tip #1: Clean Up Your Desktop

The desktop is the first thing you see when your Mac launches, so if you want your Mac to perform at maximum efficiency, you should start by cleaning up the desktop.

In case you didn’t know, the number of icons you have on your desktop is directly related to how much memory resources your Mac is currently using. Therefore, having a cluttered desktop will leave you with a slower Mac.

Tip #2: Hide Your Desktop Items

If you do not have the time on your hands to clean the desktop right now and you have a presentation coming up, there is a smarter way to hide desktop icons mac has than by placing all of them in one folder and having to deal with them later on.

To hide desktop icons, you can use Mac Terminal. Go to Applications, launch the Terminal, and go to Utilities. Then, type in the text “com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false” and hit the Enter button. Now, type in “killall Finder” to restart the Finder.

Tip #3: Check Storage Space

Having between 10% – 15% of free disk space directly influences Mac’s performance. If you are dealing with a slow computer and have no idea how much free storage space you still have, you can easily check it.

To do so, click the Apple icon that is located at the top left corner of your computer’s screen. Then, choose About This Mac, and click on the Storage tab. You might have to wait a little bit until the data is calculated, and you will be able to see how much storage space is free.

Tip #4: Use the Manage Storage Option

On the same Storage menu window, you will see a Manage button on the right side. Clicking on it will lead you to four different options that can help you free up disk space and make your Mac perform faster.

Tip #5: Uninstall Apps

One app can take up from 8 MB to 3 GB of space on your computer. And honestly, it would be not easy to find a person that uses each and every app download from the App Store.

Thus to free even more space on Mac, go to the Launchpad, take a look at the apps you have on your computer and uninstall the ones you barely use.

Tip #6: Go Through Your Photo Library

With all of the social media popularity we have today, people create more media content than ever, especially the ones who work as social media content creators on influencers.

Therefore, if you were to go through your Photo Library, you will find many similar pictures, and deleting those will leave you with even more free disk space and better performance.

Tip #7: Review the Downloads Folder

Another place on your computer that has a high possibility of storing unused files is the Downloads folder. Here you will find all of the files you downloaded from the internet, like PDF flyers or installation files.

Some of those files might have been sitting there untouched for months. Thus it is a great idea to review this folder from time to time and delete the files you no longer need.

Tip #8: Empty the Trash Bin

After all this cleaning up you have done on your Mac, remember to complete the final step, which is emptying the Trash Bin.

As long as you still have all of the deleted files in your Trash Bin, those files are still taking up disk space on your computer.

Tip #9: Update macOS Regularly

If you want your Mac running smoothly and efficiently, it is necessary to update the macOS regularly. Apple is constantly working on improving its’ products’ performance, so installing the updates might not only fix some technical issues you were having but even improve the entire performance of the computer.

More to it, macOS updates often include security improvements, and as new malware and viruses are created almost every day, it matters to update the macOS regularly to avoid such unpleasant situations as personal data leakage.

Tip #10: Ensure a Cool Environment

If you own a MacBook laptop, the optimal temperature for your computer is between 10° and 35° C. If you live in a country where the temperature is high all year round or spend a lot of time in a hot environment, the CPU might get too hot and start overheating.

Overheating may cause your Mac to shut down to avoid total overheating. To avoid that, you can either make the environment cooler with air conditioning or purchase a cooling pad.
