‘LG Rolling’ Moniker Trademark Hints of an Upcoming LG Phone with Rollable Display

LG has trademarked LG Rolling moniker with Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) in South Korea.

In April, the company had trademarked names like ‘The Roll’, ‘Bi-Roll’, ‘Double Roll’, ‘Dual Roll’, ‘E Roll’, ‘Signature R’, ‘R Screen’, ‘R Canvas’, ‘Roll Canvas’ and ‘Rotolo’ with European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

These trademarks suggest that the South Korean company may debut a smartphone with rollable screen in the near future. LG KIPO’s listing for LG Rolling classifies it as Class 9 product that includes wide range of items such as mobile phone, LED display, monitor, a wearable smartphone, LED display and so on.

Past reports have claimed that the LG phone with rollable display could be called The Roll and the other monikers that have surfaced in trademark registrations could be names of the different designs of rollable display.

Names like Flex, Foldi, Duplex and Bendi that were trademarked by LG with EUIPO in the last quarter of 2018 could be for its first foldable smartphone.

At the beginning of this year, LG had showcased Signature OLED TV R at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 tech trade show. It’s an amazing OLED TV that features a rollable screen. The 65-inch rollable display can roll back to the base when the TV is not in use. It takes only 10 seconds for the screen to rise up or roll back.

LG rollable smartphone could be the company’s attempt at bringing the rollable TV like technology to smartphones. However, it is an adventurous claim but it may become a reality since LG President and CTO IP Park had confirmed to Tom’s Guide in June that it is working on rollable as well as foldable smartphones.

Samsung and Huawei have already debuted their foldable phones and couple of other Chinese brands like Xiaomi are expected to debut their foldable phones. Probably, the era of rollable phones may appear after foldable smartphones.
